"No, no. What are you doing? Where are you taking her? Please, tell me, what are you doing." my mother fought to take me back from his grab.
"I am doing what I am supposed to do. I should have done this the moment I held her."
"Are you really going to do it. Desolate her for good. She is your own blood, and you are giving her away." she was surprised at how heartless he had grown towards me.
"You think of me as a foolish person. Leaving her somewhere to raise questions on me. You have always been a clueless dumb-wit. I am giving her away, taking her back to where she came from. Take a good look at her, because you wont be able to see her anymore."
She was stopped in the tracks by the revelation made to her "You are going to kill your own blood." She had named the shameful and sinful act he was so audacious to do but reluctant to say out loud.
"Answer me!!!!" she screamed, held on to him and rocked him as if to rock his buried and dead soul to life. To show him that what he was going to do, he might just regret it for the rest of his life.
"Yes woman, yes." He said it without any fear in his eyes, the only thing she saw was conviction and assurance, that what he was doing was the only resort left to do, it was the right thing to do."Now back away from me" he pushed her down on the floor, ready to leave.
She knew she had tried the best she could, right from the moment I was born, to make him realize that he was a father to his daughter as well. And she would keep doing so, and maybe one day he would realize what he was doing then, was wrong and regret it as well, or he might not realize anything at all.
But she knew right in that moment if she tried to reason with him, any of the words would not be enough to stop him. He had gone way past that now, and she might just lose her daughter in the process to save his soul.
Realization hit her and she ran to the door "No,no.no.no. Wait, wait, please."
"Get out from my way, let me through."
"Please, please just listen to me once, just once please. Just listen, and then you may do as you wish, please listen to me once."
"What is it now."
"Please just do not do this. In return for this I promise the next child I bear will be a boy, and if I am unable to give you a boy, you may do as you prefer. I wont ever stop you or tell you a thing, or even come in your way. Right or wrong whatever you do then I shall accept it. I promise, please, please, please just let me keep her" from blocking his way she fell onto his feet begging for my life.
"Fine, here, have her. But hear me now itself, if you fail to give me a boy the next time, I wont be interested anymore in killing your girls. You can have them all by yourself. I can always find another womb to carry my child."
It was a dangerous bargain she had made, and the price would be too heavy to pay. But it was the only resort she saw at that moment and thankfully one that he agreed to as well.
My life along with my mother's and her second unborn child hung by a thread. My father was very relaxed, he was sure of what he had to do in the situation that would be presented to him. And he was adamant on his decision.
The little hope my mother had that he might just change his mind, feel any or little love for his family and regret his past decisions, had also faded away. And she grew more and more anxious as the day to her labor neared. Thinking about all the possible outcomes of our lives once father left, the only thing she could do was pray, pray that the gamble she played might be successful.
And maybe it was the prayers that worked or her being a good woman and doing the right things in life that karma supported her, or maybe god pitied the situation she was in, that she had a boy.
And as my father held him, my mother could see a glimmer of hope, hope that his soul could be saved, that he could love.
And from that day, for my father his son became his most prized possession.
