What's heaven?

It was bright and early on a Saturday morning and Eliza was on her way to the hospital to see her new patient from last night, Kara. Today she had to try and explain to a two year old girl that she was never going to see her parents ever again.

As she parked her car she took a deep breath thinking of all the possible ways of explaining yesterdays events to an innocent little girl. She stepped out of her car and made her way up to the staff room to drop her bag off and look at Kara's file before she went to go check on her.

As Eliza read through Kara's report she read how Kara had woken up four times during the night, crying her eyes out. When she had woken twice she had had a coughing fit so they had to make sure she was getting enough oxygen as she may still have after effects of the smoke from the fire causing the coughing problems, which should go by the end of the day. When waking up the other two times she was really upset, wanting her mommy and daddy for comfort, and so the night shift nurses had to do everything they could to help her sleep as she needed it.

As she walked down the colourful corridor she kept going over in her head how she was going to approach the toddler and break the horrible news about her parents. She approached Kara's room and opened the door to reveal a sleeping toddler. As she got to Kara she could see her golden locks stuck to her face which was due to the tears throughout the night, you could still see where the tears had fallen as there were stains. Eliza hesitantly walked over to her and softly moved the hair from her face and to the side revealing the toddlers sleeping face. Just looking at her you could tell how much she had been through, she looked broken.

After a few more moments of looking at her facial features, she noticed Kara was starting to stir out of her sleep. Kara was starting to adjust to the surrounding lights and the unfamiliar room that she was in. She started to panic as to why she wasn't with her parents and fresh tears started to form in her eyes.

"Hey your ok, I got you, I got you" Eliza said calmly, rubbing Kara's arm slightly trying to calm her. Kara was hesitant as she didn't know who the person in front of her was. Kara held onto the blanket she was wrapped into as she found this as the only comfort as all she wanted was for her mommy to show an appearance and walk through the door. Eliza sat on the bed trying to calm down Kara.

"Hey your ok, your safe" Eliza said trying to get her attention as Kara was hiding her face by hiding it behind the blanket.

"My name is Dr Danvers, and from what I have heard your name is Kara" Eliza said trying to get her to put the blanket. Kara slowly put the blanket down enough for Eliza to see her face. "So your name is Kara" Eliza asked. Kara didn't speak she just nodded her head very slowly.

"How about we get you cleaned up and in some fresh clothes", and meaning fresh clothes she means a little hospital gown. First of all Eliza was going to put Kara in a bath so that she was freshly clean and doesn't have any smell of smoke on her. Kara played with the little ducks that Eliza had provided her with, which she watched in awe at how cute she was. After that she dried her off and wrapped her in a towel to keep warm. Next, she needed to put a nappy on Kara as she was only two and not potty trained yet. After putting the fresh nappy on Kara, she put a new hospital gown on her which had a picture of Mickey Mouse on the front.

Kara started to put her tiny hand in her mouth which could indicate that she was hungry.

"Are you hungry little one" Eliza asked Kara. Kara only nodded slightly, still unsure of any of the current situation.

"Ok then I'm going to go get you some food and I'll be back as soon as possible" Eliza said heading out the door and leaving the toddler hugging her pink blanket on her bed.

Ten minutes later Eliza came back in the room holding a tray of a small bowl with weetabix inside, as well as a fresh bottle of warm milk as Kara is still only 2 and needs the milk to build strong bones. Eliza placed the tray on the bed and allowed Kara to go at her own pace with accepting food from a stranger. After a few moments Kara slowly made her way to the tray and went to grab the baby bottle of milk and placed it into her mouth, leaning back on the cushion and drinking the milk. Eliza watched in awe reminded of her daughter Alex when she was at this age. Eliza always wanted to have another child but was unfortunately told after Alex was born she wouldn't be able to have any other children, and she even considered adopting but she could never find the right child bond for her. After Kara finished her milk she ate her weetabix, leaving a little bit in the bowl. After she had finished, Kara began to feel agitated and started to twiddle her hands together.

"Mommy, daddy" the little girl begged.

"Hey, it's ok your safe here there's nothing to worry about, but there is something I have to tell you, you might not understand it now but when you are older you will understand what is going on" Eliza said to the young girl with watery eyes threatening to pour out.

"Your mommy and daddy have gone to a place where they will be at peace, and looked after, a place where they have gained their wings and have become angels, your mommy and daddy have gone to a place called heaven" Eliza said looking at the young toddler to see if she got anything she was saying.

"I want to go too" Kara said trying to stand up, but failed and fell back down landing on the soft mattress.

"Oh sweetie, you can't go there yet, and not for a very long time" Eliza said trying to make the toddler feel better. "And I'm going to look after you until your better and then we'll have a look to find you a new home."

At this point Kara had started sobbing again, realising she was never going to see her parents ever again. Eliza brought her into a hug and tried her hardest to calm her down, after an hour of crying Kara finally stopped crying. Eliza looked at the toddler to see that all the crying had tired Kara out and she had fallen asleep in Eliza arms. So Eliza carefully layed Kara on her hospital bed and put her pink blanket over her and stroked her cheeks wiping all the tears away with her thumb. Eliza only had one thing on her mind and that was how could she ever let this fragile girl go, she couldn't leave her ever, maybe she had finally found the second child she had been searching for.
