Mai couldn't help but groan inward. What were they doing here?! Outwardly, she laughed. "My! Such impeccable timing. For mediums such as yourselves to come and exorcist us."

Monk's P.O.V

"Mai." Naru whispered.

I turned wide eyed, "What?" Before me was a girl, one foot on the large beast's head. Your kidding, right? This girl looked nothing like Mai. She didn't have the short chestnut brown hair and innocent chocolate eyes. The girl before all of us was tall in height, clad in black with silver white hair that went down to her waist. Her eyes however, was what caught my attention. They were stormy black, so depp that I thought i was going to get dragged in. This was Mai?!

"Naru, are you blind?! Her entire being is completely different from Mai, I mean, look at her attitude! Surely Mai was more.....carefree?"

Masako however, remained nonchalant. "That's Mai."

We all looked at her annoyed. "What makes you believe that is Mai?!" growled Ayako.

"It's her aura," came the reply.

We all turned to face the girl, checking, searching for the, possible, Mai inside of her.

Ayako, however, held no regard to hesitation. "Mai!" She cried, racing into the arms of the girl. 'Why didn't you call me all those years?!"

The girl, remained stiff in Ayako's arms. "Ay-a-ko," she whispered, eyes dead. Slowly, she lifted her arms to hug Ayako back, awkwardly. They remained in each other's embrace for a time when one of the wolves suddenly lunged forward and attacked Ayato, pulling her away from Mai.

"Mai!" screamed Ayako. We all rushed forward, readied to attack. What we least expected was Mai to intervene.

"What do you think your doing, Layne?" she growled. The wolf shied away from her. "Enough! You guys behaved badly this time. Have you forgotten the contract?"

The wolves began to whimper. Mai sighed, calming down. "Let's go. Before there is another accident."

The wolves seemed happy about this and raced towards the forest.

"Mai!" I cried, running up to her and pulled her arm. "Where are you going?! You just came back!"

I couldn't help but panic. It had been so long since I had seen her, and now look at her. She had changed so much. before I could reach her, one of the wolves jumped in front of me, growling. I didn't stop, I just wanted to touch little Mai again!

The wolf prepared to jump on me when it was suddenly tackled to the ground by another.

"Enough!" roared Mai, "you four, return!"

All the wolves started to run, disappearing into the mist and Mai started in the direction. That was when John went and grabbed onto her arm. "Mai," he cried, "you shouldn't stay around them. They're spirits! They'll take your life force the longer you stay around them! How long have you been by their side?!"

Mai did not answer. a second past before John's eyes went wide with disbelief and horror, he dropped his grip. "You're joking, right?"

Tears started to run down his face as he broke into sobs. Mai smiled sadly, "A man shouldn't cry so easily now, should they? Goodbye."

Haru ran up and threw something into the air. Mai caught it with one hand, a flash of confusion before recognition flashed across her face as she eyed the object. She was shaking, as if she would drop it any minute.

"Didn't you tell me you'd look after it?" asked Naru.

Mai looked up from the small object and gave a small smile. "It seems you're still wearing black clothes even though you no longer have to mourne?"

Naru did not answer and she disappeared into the mist.

I ran up at him and pulled on his shirt. "Why did you just let her go?!"

He pulled my hand free of his shirt and said, "I don't think any one of us could have stopped her."

"You're Naru! Think of something!" I growled.

He sighed. "I was thinking of a plan, thank you. I was deciding on what we should do when she left. No use bringing her back by force, we have to use a different method."

I started to calm down. That was when I noticed John, Osamu and Ayako holding most of my weight back. I had not realized how angry I had looked and brushed their hands off. "Sorry, I'm okay now," I said.

The others sighed in relief and sagged down to the ground. Each of them looking so much older and more tired all of a sudden.

I looked over at John who had already gotten over his shock, his eyes red and puffy. "You okay?"

He nodded.

Lin stepped forward. "What made you react in such a way?"

John took a breath. "When I touched her, she felt cold. Ice cold, as if she was already dead. I felt her pulse of course, but it felt faint."

Everyone around me stood, silent. "But that's not the worse of it," continued John. "She felt empty. Lifeless, as if she was also one of the spirits - but that's not possible. She had a pulse. Spirits don't have a pulse and we could clearly touch her."

We all stood silently, taking in what he said. Ayako chose to break that silence. "When I went to touch her, she had skin, yes, but.....she felt like she was just bones. As if I was embracing death myself."

Ayako started to cry. "Oh Mai, what has become of you?"

Mai's P.O.V

I continued walking through the endless forest, ending up at the mansion's entrance. I had my eyes closed the entire way, deep in thought about what had happened. I looked down at the small object, held in and, confirming what just happened was real.

In my palm was a frame with a photo inside. The photo of Naru and his brother. It was only after I had seen the photo that I remembered most of my life's memories. They we're mine and yet they weren't. So confusing.

The wolves waited for me inside my room. "You took your sweet time," growled Layne.

I smiled at him, "Why hurry when I've got all the time in the world?" A sarcastic remark on my current condition. Bad move.

Layne growled in annoyance, moving towards me. His body radiating pure fury. It was only when he was a cm away that he seemed to soften. "You really miss them that much?"

I looked down at him surprise. "What? Why would you ask that?"

"You've been crying, dear," said Lilac.

I touched my face, surprised. "I was?" My face was wet. That's strange. I frowned, "I don't remember crying."

Renji whimpered and butted against my leg. "You may not realize you've been crying because its only your body that is reacting toward your meeting with them. This is my fault. When you were so readily to accept us and now your emotions are coming back."

I bent down and hugged him. "Do not say that. You were just angry that the humans had touch the forest, weren't you? Don't worry, as long as I'm here, they won't be able to find their way here and hurt you guys ever again."

These words seemed to relax the wolves and they all started to lie down and rest. That was when I realized how much I meant to them.
