You know those times where you expect one thing to happen, only to be completely surprised and have a completely different thing happen? Well that's what happened after I flung the fire extinguisher at the person who opened the door.
I don't know what usually happens when you hit someone with a fire extinguisher because it is not something I do on a regular basis, but I was expecting a thud, or a grunt of pain, or something like that. So imagine my surprise when I got something completely different.
"Hey! What the hell was that for? Are you trying to kill me?" A familiar voice asks.
Looking at the person who was now in the class room shutting the door and re-locking it all I could do was stare at them in confusion. Staring at me as if waiting for a response stood Colby.
Colby was the type of person who could be your best friend, or your enemy depending on who you are and whether or not he liked you. At one point we were enemies which involved him writing a story about me and all my friends dying of hypothermia, always slamming my locker shut, and just being overall annoying. Now we are friends though and it is completely different and all of those things are like a funny memory.
I didn't know what to think when I saw him standing there. Relief, shock, anger, confusion, all of my emotions mixed together to make one messed up feeling.
"What are you doing here? How did you get in here without being seen? How did I not hit you with the fire extinguisher? How are you not dead? How did you pick the lock? Do you have a death wish? If you got out of your classroom how come you aren't outside with the police and instead are in the room where the shooters could come in and kill you at anytime?" I asked in rapid fire mode without giving him a chance to reply.
"Um, I'm here to pick up my pizza, I have super awesome ninja skills so nobody saw me, your aim sucks so you missed me, I'm not dead because I am to awesome to be dead, I didn't pick the lock because the door was already open, some people might call it a death wish but I call it being adventurous, and where would the fun be in going to 'safety'," was his brilliant response.
Not finding anything amusing in this situation, I glare at Colby letting him know what I thought of with him being a smart a$$ in this situation.
"What? I was just trying to lighten the mood although by the look on your face I am guessing it didn't work. Anyways, I am here trying to stay alive because I had to give something to Mrs.Brewer for Miss.Wood when the school went on lockdown, I wasn't seen because I made sure nobody was around when I came here which was the reason it took me so long to get here, you didn't hit me because I was crouching on the floor trying to be as small as possible, I'm not dead because I wasn't seen, I was able to pick the lock by lots of free time and practice, I didn't go out to the police because shooters are guarding all the doors, I know because I checked, and no I don't have a death wish, this is me trying to stay alive!" He answered becoming more serious with every word he spoke.
Getting angrier with every second that passed I take a big step towards him, ready to yell at him when he suddenly tackles me to the ground with his hand over my mouth muffling my cries of protest to what he just did, when he suddenly hisses at me to shut up and listen.
Pushing myself away from him, I give him another glare before I sit still and listen. At first I hear nothing before the sound of footsteps coming down the hall once again fill my ears.
A feeling of déjà vu came over me as they once again stopped in front of my classroom door only this time instead of the jangling of keys, I heard the sound of two voices carrying threw the door.
"Which room did we go in last time? 213 or 214?"
"I don't know, I think we went in 214."
"But I thought we went in 213."
"No, I don't think so. We should really start marking the doors we have been in because otherwise someone who should die won't get the pleasure to!"
"I agree, but we can't go in one of these doors to have it be the one that we went in before because that would be going against what we said!"
"Ya ya ya I know. How about we skip which ever room we should be in now and come back when it's time to make round two so that way we can make sure we went to everyone."
"Okay great, let's do that. Now quickly come on! Boss will get impatient if we don't kill somebody soon!"
"Nah we can just say we waited for suspense because the police are expecting a gunshot as soon as possible."
"Good idea, now let's go."
The footsteps continued down the hall at a quicker pace than what they came at, but everybody remained frozen not knowing if this was some kind of trick to make us let our guard down.
Clutching the fire extinguisher in my arms, I once again held my breath until I heard the same heart stopping screams as before only this time they came from farther down the hall.
After at least five minutes of staying still and quiet I slumped down against the floor in relief and fear because even though one of us wasn't shot this time, we don't know how long we had until one of us was since we don't know how many sophomore classrooms they knew of.
Before I could freak out anymore Colby turned to me and said, "So what's your new plan?"
"My new plan? What do you mean? I never had a plan to begin with! All I was going to do was hit the shooter with the extinguisher and just go with whatever happened next!"
"Well that might have worked, except for the fact that from that conversation it seems as if two shooters are coming to every classroom, probably in case something like this happened so even if you did hit the first guy and hopefully knock him out, the second guy would shoot you before you had a chance to do anything else which would end up getting us all killed, and last time I checked, I don't want to die!!!"
Crap, I hate it when he's right.
"Well what do you think we should do then since you seem to know everything!"
"I don't know! All I know is that that plan wouldn't work so you should think of a better one where we don't end up dead."
At that point Kaleb decided to join in on the conversation with, "I agree! Hannah, you should make a plan where I don't end up dead!"
"Wow that is unhelpful in so many ways you don't understand."
"Oh please, you thought of one plan that was half decent so it shouldn't be hard to think of another one, right? And besides now you have the help of me which should make it easier."
With that Colby sat next to me and once again we were back to thinking of a plan that ended up with us alive, though we could only hope that the next one would actually work.
