Staring at the door, I hoped something would happen soon so I would quit second guessing myself. With every passing moment I found another thing wrong with the plan and I got more worried for what was about to happen.
10 seconds started to feel like a minute, 1 minute feeling like an hour. My muscles were screaming at me to drop the fire extinguisher because I wasn't exactly the strongest person to start out with so holding a heavy item for a long time wasn't working in my favor.
Just as I was about to ask Kaleb if he thought it would be okay to set down the extinguisher for a while I heard a shuffling noise and all I figured it could be was someone finally picking up the note.
"Hey man, come over here and check this out."
"What is it?"
"Uummm... A piece if paper with something written on it."
"Wow I never would have guessed that," came a sarcastic reply. "What does the piece of paper say?"
"Uuuuuuuuummmmmm, idntnw."
"Dude stop mumbling! Tell me what the note says."
"I don't know what the note says."
"What do you mean? Does it have really bad handwriting."
"No I just can't read," came the muffled response.
"What? Wow I knew you were stupid but I didn't think you were that stupid!"
"Shut up! The need to be able to read wasn't in the job description! Just read the note and tell me what it says!"
There was silence for a while in which we all listened carefully wondering if they would take the bait. At each passing second the tension in the room rose, making us all on edge.
"This was not in the overview of how this day would play out."
"Well what does the note say!" Came the impatient voice of the man who didn't know how to read.
"It, it says, uumm, it says that the sheriff's daughter is in the classroom and how if we get her and have her talk to her dad then there is a good chance we will get what we want faster and without a struggle."
"Well then what are we waiting for! Let's go in there, grab her, and then take her to the boss who will let her talk through the intercom thing or we could tell the police that if we don't get what we want we will just kill her and then when we get what we want we can kill her anyway!"
"I don't know. Boss did say that if anything weird happened we were suppose to report it to him and then he will tell us what to do so we don't 'mess everything up' in his words."
"Don't you see! That's the boss testing us! He wants to see what we can do on our own! This is our chance to really impress him! If we do this then we won't be the people he sends to do a walk through, instead we will be the next people killing someone! Can't you see the endless possibilities?!?!"
"I-I guess that makes sense."
"Yes! Let's do this thing!"
Knowing what was coming next, I bent my knees a little to even out my weight and get better balance. As the sound of keys jingling in the lock filled the room I took a deep calming breath and then got ready to use the fire extinguisher by pulling out the safety pin.The door opened and I squeezed the handles together while aiming it at the door, only to have nothing happen.
I again tried to make it work but as I tried the top of the extinguisher popped off, separating itself from the base, to reveal a hollow can. It turns out the school was so focused on other things like a cool intercom system, they ordered faulty fire extinguishers that didn't work.
This was a huge issue as the door opened the rest of the way to reveal two men standing in the door way. Both were tall, muscular, and very scary looking as they came into the room. They stopped in the door way taking in me with the broken fire extinguisher, Kaleb and Colby on either side of the door, and the rest of the class huddled in a corner looking horror struck.
The first man looked at me with a smirk on his face and spoke, "Care to explain yourself?" When I shook my head he pulled out a gun from the waistband of his jeans and pointed it at me, "Let me rephrase Explain yourselves, now."
Everyone in the class started talking at the same time trying to find someway out of this. "We didn't know what we were doing." "We are just stupid children." "I thought I smelled food." "It started out with me having to really use the bathroom." "She told me to." The excuses went on and on and on.
"Everyone shut up! I was talking to you!" The guy yelled while pointing at me.
"You see, I uuummm didn't know what the uumm sound coming from the door was so I uumm panicked and uumm grabbed the fire extinguisher because I uumm thought that it could be a fire and you know safety first so I uuummm grabbed it and uumm got ready to uuuummm use it," I mumbled quickly hoping he wouldn't pay attention to what I said and question me.
The men looked at each other confused at first but they must have decided to not question me because when they turned around they quickly changed the topic with the second guy asking, "Who here is the sheriff's daughter? Come forth now and no one has to get hurt."
This was not part of the plan and you could see the panic in everyone's eyes, so not thinking I stepped towards them and stated, "Me. I am."
Colby and Kaleb both lunged for me with a, "What are you doing!"
Not looking at them I turned to the men and repeated myself. "I am. No one needs to get hurt, you have me so take me and leave them all alone."
"Mmmmhhhhhmmmm. One problem with that," the first guy said. "We know for a fact that the sheriff has twins so your little trick won't work on us."
The three of us glanced at each other with wide eyes not knowing what to do or say.
"It was a nice try though really but when both of the twins are in the classroom it's pretty obvious you guys were trying to trick us but it won't work. So you two will come with me without a fight and you can come meet my boss," the second guy said while pointing at me and Colby.
Looking at each other in shock Colby and I didn't know what to do. We had been told before that we looked like twins but we both always denied it not seeing the similarities. But when a gun is held to your head it is amazing what some of the things you will agree to are.
We slowly walked to the door with one guy in front of us and the other behind us. We moved down the hallway while the both of us are trying not to have a panic attack. After walking for a while we came to the office. The first guy opened the door and stepped inside announcing, "Surprise surprise! Look at what we found! The sheriff's children! Isn't this exciting!"
It looked like it was time for our improvising and acting skills to come out and work their magic.
