The crowd watched as Principal Schell came out of the library and then followed by the sponsors, who then took their students back to their classes. Schell did not turn back to say anything, she just continued walking and went into her office. The teachers had a grim look to them.
In the Art Studio, the room felt very empty. There wasn't any argument between Megan or Miguel, and no jokes coming from Yuliana and Freddy. Ms. Rodriguez did not give the class any assignment or instruction, she continued to type away into her computer.
"Where did they go, Ms. Rodriguez?" Claudia asked. It almost sounded like she was angry. Ms. Rodriguez didn't even look up from her laptop.
"That's not for me to say. I can tell you for sure that it's a faraway place."
"But wait, I didn't see them come out of the library with you or Principal Schell." Angel pointed out to her.
"Schell took them into different room that's in there. She didn't let us go in there with her." Ms. Rodriguez explained.
"I should have gone with them, not Riley!" Claudia said, "I should have taken his place, he's worthless! I could bet that he's going to do something stupid!" Her voice was choking up and she took a deep breath. She was still trembling a bit.
"They'll be fine." Ms. Rodriguez said, "There's no need to worry about them. I'll be right back, I need to speak with Mr. Lucius" she then left the room.
The dismantled group remained quiet. There was a sense of grief that floated through the air. It remained too quiet that it became awkward, but nobody had the will to say anything.
Did you see if any if them came out if the library?" Stephanie asked the group, but she didn't receive a verbal response. They all just shook their head.
"That's what's fucking weird! Where could they have gone? Claudia asked.
" We need to check soon!" Angel suggested. Evelyn nodded in agreement.
"But what other room is in the library? There is only one other room that us in there and that's the librarian's office. Plus that office is always open, it's practically empty, where could have they taken them?" Stephanie added.
"Here's what we'll do. We'll stay late today after school, like around six, most of the teachers will be gone by then, so we'll sneak into the library and we'll investigate." Claudia said.
"Okay!" Angel laughed, "We'll be like Scooby-Doo!"
"Angel, you're fucking weird." Claudia smiled and everyone started laughing harder than they already were.

They all went into one of the computer labs right when the dismissal bell rang for the day. They made sure they closed the door that way no one else would come in. They had to wait in there for a few hours so most of the teachers would be gone and they wouldn't be hassled by them. Only the custodians would be around roaming the halls, but they would be occupied handling their own business.
The hours would pass by and occasionally a teacher would walk in to check who was in there, but right when they stepped in, they would pretend they were reading out loud from their text books. This would automatically drive them away. After hours of yawns, the time had come to take action. They all quickly and carefully exited the room and made their way to the library, which was just downstairs. So close, yet so far. They were all close and huddled as they traveled to the library. They all stood together as Claudia went to go open the door.
"Shit, it's locked." Claudia turned, her face full of worry.
"What do we do know?" Stephanie asked.
"I don't know." Claudia answered. From the corner of her eye, she saw one of the older custodian ladies go into the hallway, and Claudia chased after her.
"Excuse me, ma'am!" Claudia called out to the woman. She turned around and raised her eyebrows at her. "Hi, some other classmates and I have to complete a project for class that is due tomorrow morning and I wanted to ask you if you could open the library door for us?"
The custodian sighed. "I'm not suppose to open those doors after school, especially for students." The custodian said the nicest way she could.
"Please ma'am, it's a very important group project and counts a lot towards our grade. This is the only time that we have to work together. Please, we'll be very quick."
The custodian rubbed the back of her neck.
"OK. I'll unlock the side door that way no one sees you." She dug for her ring of keys and unlocked the door. Claudia thanked her and went to go get the rest of the group.
The lights were still dim in the library. They walked around many times looking for some sort of clue to where the competitors might of gone. It was hopeless. They did not find anything.
"Where the fuck could they have taken them?" Claudia asked in frustration.
"It's getting late, they're going to close the school up for the night with us still in it if we don't leave soon" Angel said.
Claudia agreed. As they were going to towards the exit, Stephanie gave a short scream and fell. everyone turned around to see Stephanie picking herself up off the floor. Angel started laughing while Evelyn went to go help her out.
"Stephanie! Why are you always falling!?" Claudia exclaimed. Stephanie's face was painted red out of embarrassment and her voice was now at a higher pitch.
"I tripped over that stupid piece of carpet over there!" Stephanie pointed. Angel went to go take a look.
"What the heck! There's a handle on the floor!"
"It's a door!" Claudia said. She pulled it up and revealed the mysterious stair way. They were all speechless and looked at one another. Except for Evelyn, to which she said:
"It's bright down there."
