"Forever I will love you."
Kaleb floated a lotus out on the lake.
"Forever you will be my best friend."
Alana floated a lotus out on the lake.
"Forever I will be sorry for what I've done."
Maddie floated a lotus out on the lake.
The three stood still, looking at their reflections.
Tears were turned to ripples into waves.
Their pasts don't matter.
What matters now is what they are.
And they are remembering him.
Maddie went to jail for first degree murder.
Kaleb was an outcast.
Alana was alone.
Nothing good came out of this.
It made everything worse.
But it comes to show how he made everything better.
When he was here.
His overanalyzing.
His singing.
The way he smiled.
His sense of justice.
It led him to his death, all of those.
But it happened.
And we let it.
Kaleb.
Kaleb loves him.
He has always loved him— it's a romance novel, what do you expect?
They always have to get up together.
But that love cannot spark.
He's gone.
And now they must march on.
Into the sun.
Into their futures.
Leaving everything behind from these terrible, terrible years.
And pretend like it didn't happen.
Freshmen to Sophomores.
Sophomores to Juniors.
Juniors to Seniors.
Seniors to college.
And they live.
They have jobs.
They don't talk.
They forgot about each other in the haze of life.
But he wasn't forgotten.
And they put these lotuses on the lake to commemorate him.
After 20 years of marching.
They stop to reflect about him.
And now they continue.
They died, but they told their kids about the greatness and joviality of him.
And their kids.
And their kids.
And their kids.
Until he was passed through each generation.
Forever.
Forever.
Forever.
