The Perfect Pair: Gabby and Cade

Revival

"I think we've lost him," declared one nurse regretfully.
     Gabby's world started to move in slow motion. She could feel cold tears streaking down her face as she ran as fast as she could to Cade's side. She didn't care that she was encouraged to stay out of the room, she couldn't bare the thought of loosing him without saying goodbye.
    Gabby knelt down by the side of his bed, and buried her face into his sleeve. Softly, she brushed his cheek with the palm of her hand, then placed her arm across his chest. The same chest that had made the machine go silent, the chest that no longer supported his body.
    She brushed away his hair and whispered in his ear. "Cade, I only knew you for a couple days but those were some of the best days I've had." "I'll miss you."
     For a few seconds, there was silence, as Gabby burrowed her head into Cade's shirt, letting tears roll freely down her face. The doctors stood behind the pair looking defeated and sad, their eyes glistening with tears. There was nothing to be done.
   Suddenly, without warning, the heart monitor gave a low groan, and sputtered to life with the faintest beeping noises.
  "Is he..." Before Gabby could finish her thought six doctor's pushed passed her in attempts to save the little life they hoped Cade had received.
    Gabby darted back and watched the scene with horror and anticipation. The doctors were bustling about, trying to preserve the faint heartbeat that appeared to be going out. Each breath Gabby took felt longer, more drawn out. She was on a rollercoaster of emotion.
    Suddenly, the tracking line on the heart number burst up and starting beeping loudly. Just two minutes later, the brain waves moniter shot up, and Cade opened his eyes, a look of pure shock and terror on his face.
    The doctors stepped back, wiping the sweat off their faces.
     "He's concious and alive, that is remarkable!" Cried a small woman doctor.
Gabby wasn't focused on what the doctors were saying. All she could think about was that a minute ago Cade was pronounced dead, and now he was alive.
     "CADE!!!!" She ran into his stunned body and enveloped him in her biggest hug. "You're, you're ALIVE!" Her excitement and relief radiated throughout her whole body.
     Cade was still laying on his bed in complete and utter shock. He hadn't fully come to his senses yet.
     "I love you," Gabby whispered.
     Then, something clicked. Cade's head jolted upright, and he smiled in recognition.
"Gabby," he said fondly, and he returned her hug.
