The Audition (Written in Gabby's POV)

Gabby thundered into the audition building a mere seven minutes before she was called. She tried to steady her breath so she could at least do a few vocal warm ups. Her heart was pounding, and she thought, "Why did I just sacrifice my chances of getting on American Idol for some boy I just met?" "This is ridiculous." But then she glanced over at Cade, who had just entered the building, rushing in behind her, and she remembered exactly why she had just spent so much time with him. He was different than the boys at home, he was real, sincere, honest, understanding, and not to mention, a bit handsome.
Gabby felt a light tap on her shoulder in the midst of her thoughts, and turned around to see a producer dressed in black.
"Five minutes until it's your turn," he said hoarsely.
Gabby tried not to freak out. She hadn't ever imagined her audition to be like this. She had imagined herself warming up an hour before the audition, perfecting her hair and makeup idly, not all in a rush. For goodness sake she was about to sing in front of KATY PERRY, LUKE BRYAN, AND LIONEL RICHIE. She silently scolded herself for not ending her time with Cade earlier, though she had loved every minute of it.
Quickly, she pulled out her phone from her pocket and turned on the camera. She reapplied her lipstick. And finger combed her bouncy curls. "It'll have to do, no more time to waste," she mumbled.
The same producer walked by and said sternly, "Three minutes! Hurry up!"
Gabby took a deep breath and started to do the quickest vocal warm ups she knew how to do. She felt her voice wavering nervously.
If her voice was like this in the audition, she never would make it through.
The producer shouted, "One minute, Gabby."
Gabby silenced her heart and said a quick prayer to God, thanking Him for the time she spent with Cade, and asking Him to allow His light to shine as she sang. With only about ten seconds left, she ran to her family and gave them a quick hug, then hurried to meet the producer who said sternly, "The judges are waiting, you're a minute late." Gabby quickly apologized, and then stepped into the room with the most confident smile she could muster on her face. After a questionnaire with the judges, she began to sing Church Bells by Carrie Underwood. She moved gracefully through the notes, a gentle swing between chords. But, the judges stopped her. "This isn't YOU," Luke coached. Gabby, starting to get flustered, shook it off. "Would you like a second song choice?" She asked. The judges nodded. Immediately, she tapped into another Carrie song, this one a little more risky, with more jumps between notes. The judges nodded in disagreement once more. "Do you have anything that's NOT Carrie?" They asked.
Now Gabby started to freak out. All she had prepared were Carrie Underwood songs. But, she knew the judges were looking at how professional she was at a time where she should freak out. She took a deep breath, and remembered that God has brought her here. She thought of Cade, how calm and serene he had been, and that eased her tension. She started to sing a church song, and the judges smiled. "Finally," she thought, letting out a sigh. And then, after she finished, the judges congratulated her, and handed her what she had come to the audition for; a shiny, golden ticket. This ticket could make her dreams come true. She gasped and thanked the judges, and ran out of the room praising God. She immediately sprinted toward her family, and, with happy tears flowing down her face, she grabbed them in a huge group hug. After about ten minutes of congratulating her, Gabby stepped aside and said, "Thank y'all so much, but Iet such a great friend today, his name is Cade, and I gotta go tell him!"
Gabby's dad frowned, "Did you say Cade? Was that the young man with curly dark hair and a guitar?"
Gabby's celebratory look turned into one of anxiety, "Yes..."
"They just took him to the hospital, he passed out in the lobby." Gabby's dad announced with dismay.
"No, it can't be..." Gabby gasped in disbelief as she turned around to hide her tears. The same Cade who she had run with to the park? The same Cade who had pushed her on the swing? The same Cade who had wished her good luck on her audition minutes before? It couldn't be, yet it was. Gabby ran to the bathroom and sobbed...
