Mine

Chapter 7

I pull into the parking lot of the hospital and I quickly turn off my car and slam the door shut. I start jogging a little but then I full speed sprint to the doors of the lobby. I look around for someone to help me find my best friend.

I run up to the front desk and ask, "Hello, sorry I'm Emma Emerald and I am looking for my friend Lily Anderson. She was sent to the emergency room and I need to see her."

"I'm sorry ma'am but she's in critical condition only family is allowed back," the lady at the front states.

"She's in critical condition?" I ask starting to panic.

"Yes, ma'am. But do not worry the doctors' are excellent here everything will turn out okay. Just take a seat and you can see her in about an hour," she says trying to calm me, but it doesn't work.

"But I am family. I am her best friend! Please I am begging you let me see her," I say slamming my hand on the counter. I see the lights over head flicker and then I take a deep breath. "Please, you have to or I will go insane," I state in a whisper head hanging low pleading.

The lady says, "Okay, give me one moment."

I look around at all the people in the lobby, staring at me. I turn around quickly back to lady at the desk, she's talking into a walkie talkie.

"Please just let her in for a couple minutes. I am very worried about her," the lady says into her walkie talkie.

I hear the doors open and I spin around for some reason and I see Matt. I run to him totally forgetting about the lady at the desk. I skid to a stop in front of him. I raise my hands slightly, their shaking. He grabs my hands and the pulls me into a hug. I am tense under his touch.

"It's going to be okay Emmy," he says into my hair.

I relax in his arms and put my head into his chest and start crying. He strokes my hair while shushing me to comfort me. After about 10 mins someone calls my name; I pull away from Matt and wipe my cheeks and eyes to get rid of my tears. I walk to the front desk with Matt by my side. "Yes?" I ask.

"She's ready to see you," she says then looks at Matt and back to me and my red crying face, "You can go in to..."

"Matt Screen. Nice to meet you," he nods and looks back at me.

"Okay Matt and Emma right this way," the lady says leading us the way.

We start following her but then my hands start shaking again. I feel a warmth spread through my right hand. I look down and see that Matt has intertwined his fingers in mine. I squeeze his hand slightly to tell him without words that I know he's here for me. I look forward and out of the corner of my eye I see him look at me then back towards the woman. I walk closer to him and then put my head on his left shoulder; and for a second I thought everything is going to be okay.

The lady pushes open the door and leads us in. I walk in slowly because I'm scared. Matt is right behind me our hands still intertwined. Once we get into the room the nurse follows us in.

"I'll be right outside if you need anything," she pauses, "Also she might be a bit confused so be easy on her."

"Okay will do. Thank you for your help," I say nodding my head.

I turn back to look around the room. The walls are the bleakest color of grey. The lights are very bright in this room and I can feel their electricity. I let go of Matt's hand and walk towards the bed that is holding my best friend.

I sit myself gently onto the bed. I stroke her arm and say, "Lily, wake up it's me Emma."

"Emma?" she asks blinking her eyes.

"Yes, yes it's me. I'm so glad your okay," I say taking a deep breath in relief.

I look over to her right wrist and I see a stitch looking scar run up her arm that stops at her neck. I gasp and cover my mouth with my hand.

Lily looks at me worried and says, "What's wrong Emmy? Is everything okay?"

"Ya, it's just your arm. I'm so sorry," I say thinking back to what happened.

"Why should you be, there was just a lose wire in the phone that's all. Right?" she asks as she looks at me and then Matt.

"One, Matt's here for emotional support and two; no that's not what happened," I state as I hang my head down in shame.

"What do you mean?" Matt randomly asks.

"Ya, what are you talking about Emmy?" Lily asks confused.

I think: How should I say this? Should I just be honest? I don't think she'll believe me. But I've got to try because it's the right thing to do; right? "I got electrical powers after Tama's assault today. Weird things have been happening all day. I tried to get them under control. I promise I was going to tell you but I didn't because then it was too late," I say explaining what really happened.

"I'm sorry Emma but I don't believe you," Lily says in disbelief.

"No I'm serious Lily. I had a dream about it when I passed out after the incident with Tama. Then the lights on my car blinked bright. My phone acted up, I saw sparks, and I feel a weird emptiness when there isn't electricity around," I say trying to convince her.

"Emmy seriously you don't have to make something up to put this on you," she says going to reach my hand.

I pull away from her before she can touch me. "Lily please I don't want to hurt you again. What can I do to make you believe me?" I ask as I scoot away from her.

"If you really have electrical powers then make something fade out or something," she says not thinking I can do it.

I look up at the lights and hold up my hands slightly as I stand up and move away from the bed. I make the lights flicker and turn off. Then I turn them back on seconds later. Wow, I think to myself I didn't think I could do it.

"Emma Ann Emerald! I can't believe it. Damnit how could you not told me before. Th-the doctors told me before you came in that the nerves in my arm are shot. You could have single handily prevented this," she says in disbelief.

"But, Lily-" I begin.

"No, stop," she says stopping me and puts up a finger; "Get out. I don't want to see you."

"But Lily you don't understand!" I state pleading.

"I said...GET OUT!" she screams and points her finger to the door aggressively.

I start walking out as a nurse comes in to check on Lily. I run out the lobby doors bawling. I just lost my best friend...my only friend.
