Chapter 1

Armin's POV

Year 847, 14th September, 7 o'clock.
I was in the training grounds of the military, standing straight in my line as ex Commander of the Survey Corps, Keith Shadis, yelled at each one of us new cadets, telling us unmotivational crap. I looked ahead of me waiting my turn patiently, okey maybe not oh-so-patiently, as soon the tall man stood in front of me.

"And who are you, maggot?!" He shouted with a frown, trying to intimidate me, how funny. I looked up at him serious and saluted "Armin Arlert from Shiganshina District, Sir!" I said loud and clear. I was born in the District of Shiganshina where two years previously, there was the first attack from the titans after a century of peace. My parents got killed in the process so I decided to join the military in need of revenge.

"From Shiganshina huh? And why are you here, maggot?!" Shadis' voice brought me back to reality as I replied "To help humanity and get rid of all the titans, Sir!"
Shadis looked at me with his usual stoic face "Is that so? With that scrawny body of yours, titans will just use you as an appetizer!!" He really is getting on my nerves. As if I gave a flying fuck about humanity, all I want is revenge.

Then Shadis just went on, until a particular cadet replied to his usual shouting "I want to kill all the titans! Every last one of them! So humanity will be finally free, Sir!!"
I looked over to where the voice was coming from and saw a tall and skinny guy, with shaggy brown hair. He surely looked very determined and motivated, not very common to see in a human.

I honestly didn't listen to anything else but just focused on that guy until Shadis yelled that we could go to our barracks. I sighed softly as I started heading to the male barracks where I had left some of my stuff previously. I was about to walk in when I felt someone tap my shoulder. I turned around and found myself face to face with the tall guy from before. Now that I could look at him more closely, I noticed he had very particular eyes, they were blue with shades of green and even some specks of gold here and there.

He interrupted my train of thoughts as he started speaking to me "Hey, I heard when you presented yourself earlier, you're from Shiganshina too, right?" He asked. So he was from there, I didn't really hear his presentation. "Yes, I am. I guess you're from there as well?" I raised an eyebrow questioningly. He smiled at me and nodded "Yeah! Name's Eren Jaeger, nice to meet you" he said and stretched his hand out for me to shake. I took his hand and shook it firmly "Armin Arlert, a pleasure to meet you" I replied.

He grinned at me "I heard what you said before, it's admirable how you want to kill all the titans in order to free humanity" he said as we walked in the barracks together. "Well, isn't that what everyone wants?" I raised an eyebrow as I looked up at him "Hm, I guess you're right, but you looked very determined!" His grin widened at the last sentence. "Well, you looked very determined yourself" I simply replied as I took my bag with my stuff and looked over at the many beds there were.

"Hey, want to stay close? It'd be nice to have a friend next to me among all of these people" Eren said from behind me. I looked at him over my shoulder and shrugged "Sure, I don't see why not" I said and put my bag on one of the beds on the top. Eren grinned again and put his bag on the bed just below mine. I hope he doesn't plan to stick around me 24/7, that'd be annoying.
I thought as I climbed up on my bed.

"So, Armin, are you here alone or you joined with someone else?" He asked all of a sudden. "I joined alone, how about you instead?" I asked, not really all that interested though. "Ah, I joined with my step sister Mikasa. Since our parents died we decided to join the military" he admitted. "Well I guess we joined under the same circumstances then..." I replied absentmindedly. "I'm sorry for you loss, Armin" he said wholeheartedly and I looked down at him, staring deep in those colorful gems of his "Yeah same here..."

All of us were back at the training grounds for our first lesson of hand to hand combat. I remembered what my parents always told me: to control my strenght at all times or else people would get suspicious. But right now, I couldn't care less, soldiers never hold back, do they?

I looked up to see a pair of shiny and colorful eyes looking down at me "Hey, Armin! Wanna pair up?" The brunette asked cheerfully. I raised an eyebrow at him and sighed "Are you sure? Wouldn't want to hurt you too much you know" I said rather serious. He just chuckled and smirked "I can do this! I'm positive" he said, hitting his own chest with his fist proudly. "Alright" I shrugged and got into fighting stance.

Eren quickly charged at me with a loud yell, now that I think about it, he's always pretty loud. At the last second I simply moved to the side, making him trip and fall down to the ground. "Ow.." he grumbled as he sat up, though I didn't wait for him to stand back up and kicked his back roughly, pinning him to the ground. "Ouch! My back!" He complained, how childish. "So, do you surrender? I can stay here all day" I crossed my arms, looking down at him. "N-never!" He frowned and took me by surprise as he grabbed my leg and freed himself.

Not bad, but still pathetic. I thought as I regained my balance. He charged at me once again, but I grabbed his fist and twisted his arm then kicked his legs from behind making him fall k.o. to the ground. "...ow.." he whined from the floor and looked up at me. He was about to say something when a raven haired girl ran over to us "Eren!!" She said rather worried "Are you okey?" She asked and helped him up.

"Ugh, stop it Mikasa! I'm not a little child anymore!" He frowned at her as he pulled away from her grip. She looked at him serious but soon enough frowned at me "You shouldn't have been so damn violent!" She said through gritted teeth. "This is hand to hand combat, there is supposed to be violence" I deadpanned. "He's right Mikasa, I'm fine! Just some scratches!" Eren huffed as he crossed his arms.

"By the way, Armin, this is my step sister Mikasa. Mikasa this is my new friend, Armin, he's from Shiganshina just like us" The brunette said with a soft grin. I simply nodded as a greeting and she did the same. Eren looked at us awkwardly and then cleared his throat "So uhm...Armin would you join us for lunch later?" He asked looking at me. I glanced at Mikasa then put my gaze back on Eren and nodded "Sure, shall we go?" I asked. Eren smiled widely and I swear I saw his eyes sparkle "Yeah!! Let's go!"

I sat calmly at my table with Eren and Mikasa, not really listening to what they were saying, when suddenly Eren got up. I looked up to see him death glaring to a horse-faced guy. "Say that again you bastard!" Eren growled. He surely is feisty. I thought.

"Hah?! You're the suicidal bastard here who wants to join the damn Survey Corps! You're mad dude!" He growled back. I frowned at his words and stood up too "Says the one who learns to kill titans just to run away from them" I remarked. "Oh look at that, Jaeger's girlfriend has come to his rescue?" He snickered. I sighed annoyed and grabbed him by his hair, slamming him to the ground

"First of all, I'm a guy you blind idiot. Second of all, shut that horse mouth of yours before you get a full beat up" I scoffed while he just groaned in pain. I looked up and Eren's eyes were almost shining and he was a making a weird face too... "Woah Armin! That was SO cool! Could you teach me that?" He asked like an excited child.

"Uhhh alright I guess? I'll teach you tomorrow at hand to hand combat" I said with a shrug then I walked out the cantine to go back to the barracks, while I heard Eren whispering "He's so cool!" Like a little fanboy. I couldn't help but smile slightly at that, he was so clumsy and funny looking. Maybe it won't be so bad to have him as a friend after all...
