Milli Reed glanced down at the anonymous note. Jeez, she thought, this better be good. She swung open the old door covered in cobwebs and saw smashed windows and peeling wallpaper. Milli double-checked that she had the right address. Apartment 137 was all it read. She heard something dripping from above and watched as it splashed down onto the litter-streaked floor. She took a deep breath and nearly choked on the stale air that smelt like rotten eggs. Milli took a tentative step forward and reached the dodgy-looking stairs, knowing there was no way on earth that the elevator would work. She tested her weight on the uneven steps. Milli shrugged and just went for it, sprinting up and jumping over the few steps that had fallen through. She arrived on the last floor, gasping for breath. She saw personal belongings scattered on the floor and picked up a shattered china doll, elegantly dressed. What made everyone leave in such a hurry so long ago yet never come back? She wondered. Every door was hanging off their hinges, all except one. She walked up to it and tried to make out the almost unreadable number – 137. Milli narrowed her eyes, wondering if it was a trap. Oh well, she thought and went ahead and opened the door.

The first thing Milli noticed about the room was that it was black. Very black. So black that it was terrifyingly claustrophobic. She lifted a hand up to her face, but couldn’t see it, even with the light coming in through the door behind her. The door! She spun around to find it firmly locked.

‘Oh My God’ she said out loud, ‘This is so cliché.’

Milli took a few steps into the center of the room, her footsteps echoing around her, but stopped, sensing something was wrong. Her mind flashed back to one of those old silent horror movies where suspenseful music comes on and the ‘damsel in distress’ never sees the crazy old man coming up behind her. Milli instantly froze and slowly looked over her shoulder, when suddenly she was falling and the world around her went dark.

The man in black stood in front of the slightly cracked mirror. Apart from the freshly pressed white shirt he wore, he was all in black. Black tie; Black suit; Black shoes. Black, black, black. He lifted a hand to adjust the angle of his hat and smiled. Perfect, he thought. He pulled the gleaming handgun out of his pocket and slipped in 3 bullets. He had one last look in the mirror and walked towards the only exit of the room: a door covered in cobwebs which held lots of secrets, lots of spiders, but most importantly, a girl who would put back the broken pieces of his life and pay dearly for what she had done.
