Demi's mind was racing as she sat quietly beside Anthony in the diner booth as he joked with his friends sitting across from him. They all played football together and always hung out in the local diner Rogers after school but when Anthony and Demi began dating she was obligated to go and be with Anthony.
She looks up from her phone where she had been scrolling through dresses for graduation and sees the smiling faces of the three boys sitting across from her, she looks up at Anthony who is beaming from ear to ear. Without a word, he looks in her direction as if sensing her eyes on him and he gently kisses her lips before going back to his friends.
Demi shifts her attention back to her phone but instead of looking at dresses she starts scrolling through Facebook. She sees a post that Shay shared and something about strikes a cord within Demi. The post is a picture with a quote, 'Sometimes you must accept when a relationship has reached the end because there's a big difference between desperation and determination.' Demi reads the quote a few times before hitting the like button.
Thoughts of Shay and the meaning of the post begin to flood into Demi's head. Demi had noticed that Shay had been very quite and withdrawn the past two days. Demi was aware that Shay was similar to her before she met Anthony and that being quite was her personality but something changed from the first day they met and maybe this post was key. Though Shay was of definite interest to Demi, she had yet to stalk through her Facebook page meaning she was completely unaware of Shay's sexual orientation and that the post was regarding Shay's ex-girlfriend.
Without thinking any further, Demi messages Shay.
Demi: Hey Shay, how are you? You seemed a little withdrawn today
Shay: Hey Demetria, I know I'm so sorry. There is just something going on right now. but I will be fine. Thanks for checking in.
Demi: No need to thank me. Just don't let anyone get you down and never let them dim your light. I am here to talk if you need a friend. Please remember that x
Shay: That's sweet Demetria. Thank you but this is something I need to work through by myself for now. You are a good friend and it means alot to me! x
Demi stares at the message from Shay, she respected Shay for not going with the crowd in so many ways but also in calling her Demi. Everyone from her parents, to Anthony to most teachers called her Demi but Shay and Ms. O'Neill seemed to be the exception that called her by her full name and Demi liked it that way.
Demetria was the name given to her by her grandmother from Mexico who died shortly after she was born so the name meant alot to Demi but not much to anyone else. Having Shay respect her with such a minor gesture such as a name meant the whole world to her.
Demi is pulled out of her head by Anthony who begins to kiss her neck and put his hand between her thighs. Demi jolts upright in the booth, pushing Anthony's hand away from between her legs. She looks at him as she does so and he looks visibly upset. He pulls away from her and she sits there ignored once again but this time she has no one keeping her warm, he has left her out in the cold.
Demi stands up from her seat and gathers up her handbag and book bag. She draws the attention of Anthony and his three friends in the booth who all look at her with curiosity.
"I need to get home. I have a test tomorrow that I need to study for. Talk to you guys later. See you later Anthony." She waits for Anthonys response but instead he just scoffs and she walks out of the diner, tears streaming down her cheeks. Demi loved Anthony but he had a side to him that she hated, a part that only sought to cause pain and sorrow, a part that knew exactly how to emotionally hurt someone.
Outside the diner the rain is pouring down and Demi has no choice but to begin walking to the bus stop as Anthony was always her lift everywhere. Demi struggles to carry her books, handbag and everything in her hands as she walks towards the bus stop, tears continue to roll down her cheeks as she reaches the sheltered bus stop.
Demi is huddled up and doesn't notice the black jeep that passes and then pulls back up to the stop. A voice that Demi would recognise anywhere bellows over the noise of the rain and passing cars, "DEMI! IS THAT YOU?!" Demi looks up to see Shay sitting in the truck with someone. "Get in." Demi smiles and struggles towards the truck with her stuff. Shay jumps out of the truck and helps her into the truck, getting soaked herself. Shay sits upfront with a dark haired woman behind the wheel who continues to smile as Shay helps Demi into the truck.
"Sweetie, why in the heavens would you be out in weather like this?" The woman's voice is soft and kind just like Shay's.
"Demi, this is my mom Teresa. Mom this is my friend Demetria. She is the one that has been showing me around school and helped me to navigate the building." Shay looks back at Demi and smiles."Nice to meet you Mrs. Mitchell" Demi speaks softly and respectfully regarding Shay's mother.
"Oh dear, please don't call me that, am I old or something? Teresa will do just fine." For a brief moment watching the mother-daughter relationship, Demi feels jealous for it was something she never experienced with her own mom. Even though they are immersed in conversation, Shay draws Demi into conversation.
"Dear, do you want me to drop you home or you can join us for dinner? It's always nice to meet Shannon's friends." Demi smiles as Shay looks back at her a big smile on her face with almost pleading eyes. "Sure dinner sounds great! Thank you."
