Shay rustles through her wardrobe finding a pair of black leggings and her old basketball hoodies and hands them to Demi who is sitting on the edge of her bed.
"Here you should put these on so you don't freeze to death. There is some fresh towels in my bathroom and you are welcome to use whatever you need. Dinner should be ready in an hour." Shay's smile is reassuring and Demi takes the clothes from her smiling slightly.
"Thanks so much Shay. You don't know how much I needed someone this afternoon and you and your mom have been there. I don't know how I will ever repay you." Shay laughs before heading towards the door, "it's what friends do, right?" She leaves without a reply and leaves Demi to shower and change.
In the kitchen, Shay's mom is busy preparing dinner when she enters and offers a helping hand. Shay begins to prepare the salad for her mom when the dreaded questions start.
"Sooo Shay, my baby gir-" Shay cuts her mom off midway knowing what is coming.
"Mom! We are strictly friends and that is it. She has a long term boyfriend! Not every girl I am friends with is a love interest you know."
"I know sweetie but it's just I wish you would find someone that treats you the way you deserve. Not control you, just love you."
Tears well up in Shay's eyes, "I know mom, I wish I had that too but it takes time."
Shay and her mom begin to talk about school and her college prospects when Demi walks into the kitchen. Shay is almost dumbfound by the woman standing in the doorway with no makeup, wet hair up in a messy bun and Shay's hoodie. She was almost a vision to Shay. Demi gives a sideways smile before walking over to the stool seated beside Shay.
Shay watches as she sits down and leans closer to Demi, "everything okay?" Demi smiles and nods before turning to help with preparing dinner by setting the table. Shay notices that Demi works in silence so she decides to check on her and see if she can help.
"Mom, I am just going to go talk to Demi. We will be down to dinner by 6pm." Shay walks out of the kitchen and into the open floor dining room to find Demi.
"Hey, can we talk? Upstairs?" Demi looks curiously at Shay before following her upstairs.
Shay's mind begins to race as Demi follows closely behind up the stairs, down the hall and up the stairs to her attic bedroom. Opening the door, Shay stands back to let Demi in before clicking it shut. Shay closes her eyes leaning against the door and takes a deep breath before looking at Demi who is sitting on the window seat watching Shay closely.
Before Shay can get a word out, Demi speaks in a low voice. "Shay, look I appreciate what your family have done for me but I think I am just going to go." Shay snaps back into attention and looks curiously at Demi, "What are you talking about? My mom is cooking us dinner and I can drop you home afterwards if you want or you can hang out here for awhile, whatever you want!" Tears begin to fall from Demi's eyes regardless of her protests when Shay finishes speaking, Shay moves quickly across to Demi's side and holds her close and she continues to cry.
After a couple of minutes, Demi stops crying but keeps her head rested on Shay's shoulder. Shay's mind continues to race as she imagines what it would be like if she could cuddle Demi and kiss her. While Shay is enraptured by her thoughts, Demi asks her what she wanted to talk about but Shay doesn't hear her until she moves away from her and Shay is grounded by the sudden loss of warmth from her side.
"What did you want to talk about?"
Shay looks at Demi with a confused look, her question taking time to register. "I noticed while preparing dinner you are distant and completely blank. Is everything okay? Did something happen with Anthony?"
Demi stares straight through Shay, a blank look on her face as if she is somewhere else. Shay waits patiently, watching Demi as she disappears to another world wondering where this gorgeous woman has gone to.
"You know, I think your my first friend. Like I have never actually had a friend that I could call and depend on." Tears begin to stream down Demi's face and Shay wipes them gently with her finger, "Look I am right here. I am sure you have other friends Demi. Everyone loves you in school!"
"Shay that's just it. I honestly don't have other friends. All those people love Anthony and only tolerate me because I am with him. Before dating Anthony, I was the quite girl that sat at the back and knew my teachers better than my peers. I honestly have no friends Shay and you found me tonight after having a fight with Anthony which suddenly means no one likes me now!"
Tears are streaming down Demi's face, Shay gently wipes them from her cheek gently but can't help but caress Demi's face as she does, her fingers tingling with the soft skin. Shay pulls her hand away immediately realising that she has got wrapped up in the moment but as she does Demi's hand grabs Shay's and holds it to her cheek. Embracing each others touch, Demi makes eye contact with Shay and gives a sideways smile, "I really should get home Shay, I'm sorry."
