Three days. Three days she has been missing from school and the more time went by the more visible the worry was on Shay's face. Shay had known Demi for about a month at this stage and not once had she missed school in that stage so not seeing Demi's face in the halls each day was unsettling for Shay. Sitting on the edge of the bed, Shay pulls out her phone and scrolls through the numbers in her phone. Looking for the one number she needs.
As the dial tone rings for a third time, the screen turns bright and a familiar face appears and Shay can't help but smile.
"Hey you, I'm sorry for how things have gone. I should never have let them go so far because the truth is, I love you Kelly."
"Babe, that is all I wanted to hear you say. I want to be with you and being apart is hard but I do understand that neither of us are in a position to uproot right now. Can we try long-distance because you are the one I want Shay!"
A smile creeps across Shay's face and she feels everything is right for the moment.
After spending an hour on the phone with Kelly talking about their relationship and what they intend to do going forth, Shay hangs up the phone and heads down the stairs for dinner with her family.
"Sweetheart, could you help Benji to set the table please?" Shay nods her head and proceeds to help Ben laying out the plates and glasses while he laid the napkins on the plates.
Throughout dinner, Shay engages in nonchalant conversation with her parents about school and college when they turn to the dreaded subject of scholarships that Shay always gets nauseated at.
"Honey, you know you need to make a choice of whether you want to go with the music or sports scholarship because the deadline for some schools is coming about pretty fast and scouts and recruiters will be coming out."
"I know, I know. I am just so unsure right now like they both mean so much to me and I enjoy both but choosing which one to apply with is what I am struggling with as I will have to have it as part of my classes, you know?"
"Shay, there is absolutely no pressure from us we just want you to be happy but you know you need to choose one as we can't afford to pay for an Ivy League school and you deserve the best so a scholarship is your best option."
Shay takes a deep breath and excuses herself from the dinner table and resorting to the seclusion of her bedroom. Shay lies on her bed and takes out her phone scrolling through her Facebook feed when she notices a post by Demi about mental health. Shay stares at the post and begins to recall the moment when Anthony broke up with her publicly and the embarrassment and humiliation she felt around everyone, cowering under their judgmental stares. Without a second thought Shay opens her messages and clicks on Demi's name.
Shay: Hey Demetria, I hope everything is okay. I have missed you around school
As soon as the message is sent, Shay lets out a sigh of relief knowing that she needed to fix everything in her life and this is the last thing. Shay refreshes her messages over and over expecting a message back but nothing before she knows it, she has fallen asleep waiting for a reply from Demi

Demi wakes up feeling groggy and tired but the simple message she received last night from Shay has made her want to go back to school and make amends with her. Without a boyfriend or friends, Demi knows that only person in her life now is Shay who is least expected so she realises that she needs to confront her suspected fear of Shay's touch from a friend, something all new to her now.
Pulling on a pair of workout leggings and top with runners, Demi sprays some dry shampoo into her now short, wavy hair to her shoulders and puts on her glasses running out the door. Throughout the three days, Demi had attempted to find herself again to a time before Anthony and so cutting her hair and removing her contacts was changes she made which had previously been influenced by Anthony.
Pulling up to school in her white Fiat 500 with red interior, Demi takes a deep breath and gets out shaking slightly from the nerves of entering the now big and monstrous building that was once her kingdom. Slinging her backpack over her shoulder, Demi walks into school and towards her locker to get her books. She manages to ignore the whispers and stares from students who are clearly taken aback by her drastic change to appearance and return to school.
Demi considers walking to her class and waiting inside for the bell to ring but instead decides to walk towards Shay's locker. At the locker, Demi sees Shay getting her books and talking to Isaiah, her lab partner. She looks over afraid to approach as she is unsure of how they will receive her approaching them when Shay catches Demi standing there. Demi turns away quickly after making eye contact and begins walking away when a hand grabs her arm and spins her around.
Shay and Demi lock eyes and try to figure each other out, searching for the unspoken truth and meaning in their silence. "Did you get my message?" Shay keeps her eye contact which makes Demi look away before replying, "You missed me huh?" a smile plays across Demi's lips as she raises her eyes up to meet Shays. "I mean as much as one misses the girl that sits two rows across." Demi can't help but giggle which makes Shay smile at the cuteness of her giggle. "Well I missed you. Alot!"
Shay and Demi walk together to their class and with Shay's presence Demi no longer fears the stares and judgement of others as she stays close as reassurance. To distract her, Shay engages Demi in conversation about the English assignments upcoming and the Shakespeare text they will be moving onto next, Romeo and Juliet.
Demi stays close to Shay throughout the school day and has lunch with her and Isaiah who then agrees to swap lab partners to avoid any hostility leaving Demi and Shay being lab partners. Demi couldn't believe that the one person that she pushed away because she showed she really cared was the very one responsible for coming back to school and making real friends. Walking out of school together after their final class, Demi heads towards her car when Shay says goodbye and heads towards the bus.
"Shay, I can drive you home if you would like."
"Are you sure?"
"Of course, c'mon."
As Demi drives, she notices that Shay seems to be anxious pulling at the rip in her jeans and fidgeting constantly. Shay directs Demi and she quickly realises that she headed towards the other side of town where her parents always banned her from going stating that people from there are no good thieves. Demi glimpses across at Shay and suddenly this stereotype is dismantled as she appears and proves to be a kind, beautiful and funny girl.
Pulling up outside a rough looking house with a large porch, Shay smiles "This is me. Thanks for dropping me home." "No problem, it's the least I can do after you supported me so much today and at least I got to see your house in the light this time." Shay looks away embarrassed by her house when Demi reaches and touches her hand, "I like it. Has that family feel about it. Unlike my cold and dark house." Shay smiles and croaks "Thanks. See you tomorrow?" "See you tomorrow Shay, pick you up at 8am" and Demi speeds off not waiting for a reply, smiling her whole way home.
