Alex
"Well then," I said, stepping onto the first ladder rung. "Let's go save the world."
That small sentence changed my life, and I still haven't decided if it was for the better or not.
I was sitting in AP class, listening to Ms. Jackson drone on and on about our algebra test on Friday. Sitting to my left was Jem, my best friend, doodling on scrap paper. We've known eachother since second grade, and we grew up together. Sitting behind Jem was Carter, who seemed to be just as spaced out as I was. Behind me was Magnus, the most outgoing of our quartet. His hair was spiked up and dyed red, and he was wearing glittery eye makeup.
"Hey, Alex," Carter whispered, bringing me back to the present.
"Yeah?" I asked, turning slightly.
He passed me a paper. "Try and solve the problem."
I opened up the small, crumpled up paper he had just given me. But you see--Carter, the little devil, had given me a (very) poorly drawn picture. The picture was of me and one of my other friends--Jess--whom he "shipped" me with. I shot Carter a glare, and began to gather up my things. I looked up at Ms. Jackson just as she said, "Just remember, your essays are due on Monday."
Just as she finished, I heard an electronic "ring, ring, ring," echo throughout the building. I grabbed my stuff and got up, catching Carter as he tried to run away.
"Not cool Mate," I grumbled, tossing out the paper as we left.
"Sorry, sorry," he said, totally not sorry. "It's just that you two are so cu-" Carter was cut off my our principal, Rob Featherstone, talking over the loudspeaker.
"Would Magnus Starr, Carter Flounder, Alexandra Mantell, and Jemma Lopez-" I saw Jem cringe at her full name, which she hated, "-please come to the main office? Thank you," he clicked off, and I looked at Magnus.
"Did you sign us up for another committee?" I asked, narrowing my eyes at him.
"No!" Magnus flushed red at my accusation. "I only did that once," he mumbled, "and it was for a good cause!"
"But-" Carter cut in, "-then why would Featherstone call us to his office? We haven't done anything wrong, have we?" I could see Carter getting nervous, he'd never been called to the principal's office before, let alone got in trouble.
"Well no one knows, but we're going to have to go anyway," Jem said, determination in her voice. "We didn't do anything wrong, Carter, so don't have a guilty conscience. Let's just go," Jem started off towards Mr. Featherstone's office, and we had no choice but to follow our friend.
The walk to Featherstone's office was quiet, well, not so quiet for the other kids, who were bustling around. We, however, didn't talk the whole way there. We arrived just as the bell rang, signaling the beginning of period 3. I exchanged glances with my friends, and Magnus knocked on the door. A muffled "come in," floated out into the hallway.
"Open the door," I whispered.
"No, you do it!" Magnus responded.
"Magnus was the one who knocked, so he should open it," Carter pointed out, on my side for once.
"But I don't want to!" Magnus whined.
"You people are crazy!" Jem whisper-yelled. "I'll just do it."
She pushed us aside, twisted the knob, and pushed.
Carter
I watched as Jem pushed the door open, revealing a slightly messy office. I've never been to the principal's office before, excluding the time Magnus signed us up for the dance committee. Jem held the door as Magnus and I walked n, Alex waiting for Jem.
