"Long time no talk, Ophelia."
The sound of his voice made me stiffen. Being the only student in the hallway and late to class was bad enough, but getting a call from your rapist baby daddy is worse. When I answered the call from the unknown number, I didn't expect to hear his voice. I was too stunned to answer.
"Ophelia, I heard a few things when I came back that caught my attention. My buddies tell me you gave birth to a child that just happens to be mine," he said those words that sent a chill of fear crawling up my spine.
I was scared that he would do something to me and my baby.
The chills were telling me my baby's life was in danger.
He continued. "So, give me my son, or your entire family will pay. And don't try running; I will find you and make you regret it." Then he hung up. Tears gathered in my eyes.
He's going to take my baby.
He's going to take my baby.
He's going to take my baby.
This repeated in my head until I felt my entire being was about to break. I felt helpless and scared. I backed up against the wall being that my legs felt as if they could not hold me anymore from fear.
I didn't know it was possible, but he was going to try and break me a second time. Just when I thought our lives could go back to normal. I slid down the wall that was currently holding me up. Sobs racked my body as I buried my head in my hands. A few minutes passed before I lifted my head. No one could help me but one person. And I went to that one person that I knew would know what to do in this situation. My brother. He would know what to do.
I reached Felix's classroom that was not far from mine in a hurry, and peaked through the glass in the wooden door. I saw him fiddling with the cover of his book in fascination. I pulled out my phone and sent an urgent text. After a few seconds I saw him stiffen slightly, apparently feeling the vibration of his phone, and slid the phone, inconspicuously, out of his pocket. His eyes snapped right up to me in worry.
Without hesitation he raised his hand, coming up with a lame excuse to leave, and when the teacher excused him, he dashed out the door. I was aching to get to the babysitter's and check on Aiden.
Once me and Felix started out of the school, I started telling him what happened. He was shaking with anger by the time we reached the car, but he didn't stop to talk or punch anything. I think he felt my urgency to get to Aiden. I cranked the car and we sped out of the parking lot and to the babysitter's house. I called her multiple times, but her phone went straight to voicemail every time. I cried in frustration and fear. I felt Felix ease the phone out of my grasp, and realized I was squeezing it too hard.
I heard him call Mom and Dad and tell them what was happening. I heard dad cussing and Mom trying to calm me and him down.
"We will meet you there. We are going straight to the police, no matter what that sorry excuse for a human being said to you," my dad said in anger. Then he hung up. I felt Felix grasp my hand in comfort. We stayed that way until we reached the house. I jumped out and saw my Dad and Mom pull up. We raced to the door, and I knocked viciously.
To my relief, Miss Harbinger opened the door with my little bundle of joy. I almost cried in relief. I grabbed him desperately and pulled him to my chest. Tears were running down my face as my parents explained what was happening. The kind old woman invited us inside to calm down, but my dad kindly, but urgently explained that we needed to leave. She understood and grabbed the diaper bag and bid us farewell with a hug and a Tupperware full of cookies.
My parents followed us to the police station. Aiden had fallen asleep in his carseat. My fear settled a little, but it didn't disperse. Felix still had an angry face which I didn't think would disappear for a good while. He saw me looking at him and gave me a small smile.
We pulled into the police station. The lady at the front desk waved and smiled at my dad. But confusion was shown on her face because it was Dad's day off. I guess she didn't care, because she shrugged and went back to what she was doing. He didn't even acknowledge her wave. He Just walked right by the desk, leading us to his Chief.
We spent hours explaining and figuring out what to do. We even brought a few other officers and detectives in.
They didn't know what to do.
Great.
To say I was pissed was an understatement.
"So that's it? Y'all don't know what to do? My son and I were threatened today and the people that are supposed to know what to do, don't know. Do you all have any suggestions?" I spit at the chief. Everybody in the room inhaled. He looked up at me holding Aiden, who was currently grabbing my hair in his chubby fingers.
Surprisingly the chief, known for his rude ways, walked up to me and grabbed my shaking, free hand. He looked at me and surprised everybody by pulling Aiden and me into a hug.
"Everybody knows what Derrek did, and we all know he should have gotten more time in prison. I'm very sorry I couldn't do anything that night. We all are. So, as a repayment, I am going to protect you all with everything I have. Your son deserves the best life, and you do too. So I want to propose this to you all." He said and stepped back to look at us. "I am going to send your family somewhere you all will be safe. You two will go to a different school, and I am transferring your dad to the police department there. You all will have to stay off the radar until we find Derrek. And then you all will be able to choose where to go. You all can choose to stay there or come back. But the station will buy a house and take care of the minor things."
I smiled. A glimmer of hope shined through my helplessness.
"Thank you so much," I said and cradled Aiden and kissed his forehead. My family stood up and grasped me in a family hug.
I knew I would miss Celeste and the babysitter, but I had to think of my little family before I could think about friends.
The next few days we were constantly packing up our belongings. The whole house was filled with boxes. By the third day, we were loading boxes into the U-haul. There were cop cars and policemen everywhere around the house watching to make sure no one was watching us leave. They checked and turned around every car that came within two roads away as a precaution.
They even gave us a police escort out of town. Which was super awesome. I followed behind the u-haul as we said goodbye to our hometown and said hello to our new life.
