What people always say things, it's not always true. They say sticks and stones may hurt my bones but words will never hurt me. Frankly, that just isn't true. Sometimes the words people call you are more hurtful than getting punched across the face. Sometimes, crude remarks hurt more than anything else in the world. They also say it's never too late to apologise. Sure, it may not be too late to actually apologise but it's probably too late to be forgiven. Over that time you never even tried to apologise because you see no point, their disliking towards you only grows. It doesn't stay consistent, it doesn't lessen if you think they'd "forget about it". It grows like freaking cancer. You may not see it physically but it's growing alright. So next time, just apologise instead if sitting there.
