Chapter 15

Hazel’s feet were begging to grow blisters, her hair was knotted once again and she smelled like garbage, but somehow Dimitri didn’t seem any different. Hazel noticed that Dimitri was never in a bad mood. She wished she could be more like him.

“It’s my turn.” Hazel stated. Dmitri looked at her in a confused manor.

“Your turn for what?” he asked as she grinned at him.

“My turn for twenty questions.” Realization dawned on his face. He grinned and nodded waiting for the first the question from Hazel. “Umm, why did you run away?” Hazel asked. Dimitri’s face showed surprise, it was the last question he thought she would ever have asked.

Dimitri knew he had to make something up fast, but he didn’t want to lie; he had done too much of that already. He looked around for a distraction but couldn’t find any.

“My brother was the favourite; he got absolutely everything he wanted. I was just on the sidelines, like watching a movie.” Dimitri replied, knowing his lame excuse would not impress Hazel.

“That’s a stupid reason to runaway.” Dimitri shrugged and looked ahead. Hazel sighed and sped up her walking.

“Why did you runaway?” Hazel looked mortified and Dimitri immediate felt guilty.

My turn, remember?” she mumbled, suddenly interested in the strand of yellow thread hanging off her shirt.

“Right.”

When they finally made it to the next town, Hazel was starving. her stomach rumbled and Dimitri cursed. He opened his mouth to speak, but Hazel stopped him.

“Don’t say anything. It’s not your fault.” Dimitri mumbled something that didn’t even sound English. Hazel frowned, but then realized what he was doing.

“Stop talking in Russian or tell me what you’re saying!” Dimitri smiled at her, but failed to tell Hazel what he was mumbling on about.

“Ok we can stay here for the night; I’ll go get us some food.” Dimitri stated, walking towards the shops. Before he could move any further, Hazel grabbed his arm. Dimitri immediately spun around, shocked. Hazel let go and looked away, embarrassed.

“I’m coming with you. You take all the responsibility, but I need to step it up.” Knowing that there was no use in arguing, Dimitri nodded his head for her to follow.

Hazel froze as she was walking. The first thing anyone saw was the wanted poster of her. It had to be taken down; she didn’t even want to think about what would happen if Dimitri saw it. Trying to look innocent, she edged her way to the notice board. After making sure Dimitri wasn’t looking, she pulled down the poster.

“What are you doing?” Hazel leaped ten feet in the air and squealed like a little girl. She could tell Dimitri was trying hard not to laugh, but she was more focused on the poster.

“Nothing!” she insisted. With one swift movement, Dimitri had the poster in his hands. He looked at it and handed it back to her, he didn’t seem upset at all. In fact he was still trying not to laugh. “You’re going to call the number aren’t you?”

“Nope.” He replied. she froze, had she heard him right?

“What?” she asked again.

“I’m not telling. Why don’t you go to the bakery and get whatever you want, here take this money. Don’t use yours. And don’t argue.” The stunned Hazel took Dimitri’s money and headed to the bakery, Dimitri followed closely.

What he told Hazel was the truth; he wasn’t going to call the number. But the poster meant that he needed to be more careful with her and make sure nothing happened to her. The poster meant Lisa and Astra were looking for her and he wouldn’t let them find her even if it meant his own death!

“Hey are you ok?” he looked up to see Hazel staring at his hands. His gaze landed on his clenched fists. It was then that he realized his nails were digging into his skin, leaving a white make behind. He slowly and unclenched them and took a deep breath in and out.

“I’m fine.” He stated firmly. “What did you get?”

“Nothing much, just two hotdogs. One for me and one for you.” She handed him a hotdog and for once he took, Dimitri was starving!

“Thank you.”

“Dimitri, how come you didn’t care about the poster?” he knew the question was coming and he had a response ready, for once it wasn’t a lie.

“I saw it in the last town, but I don’t care. What matters is that to me you seem nice enough.” Hazel smiled, but didn’t say anything more.

Dimitri kept watch as Hazel fell into a deep sleep. He smiled, she looked so peaceful. He knew he should keep his distance from her and not get too attached, but he couldn’t help it. Dimitri scooted closer to her. What happened next was unclear even to a trained body guard. Somehow Hazel’s head was resting on his shoulder and she was still fast asleep. He breathe a sigh of relief when she didn’t wake up at the sudden movement.

“Мне очень жаль” Dimitri whispered. Hazel stirred and he froze.

“What does that mean?” she whispered back. Dimitri smiled.

“Not telling.” He replied. Hazel immediately fell asleep again. Dimitri couldn’t think of a time when he had smiled so much in his life.

“Dad it’s been three weeks, shouldn’t he have brought her back by now?” Andre asked, trying hard to pretend he didn’t care. Marlon sighed.

“I was wondering the same thing, but he called me. Apparently it’s all going to plane. I’m just worried that they’ll become friends and then Hazel will realize it was just a plane to get her back here.”

“Who did you send?”

“I can’t tell you that, but you’ll see in a couple of days. There close so don’t worry.” Marlon confirmed. Andre scoffed.

“I am not worried.” He replied, angrily stomping off to talk to his brother.

Everyone thought that he missed Hazel, but he didn’t. It was so much more peaceful without her. When Astra and Lisa realized Hazel wasn’t at the Wake House they had gone elsewhere. Everything was perfect; accept for the fact that everyone was worried about Hazel.
