Chapter 2
Hazel mentally made a list of items she would need in order to survive out on the streets. She didn’t know where she would go, but she did know that she had to leave before everyone woke up.
She yanked open her closet door, walking in to find a suitable carry bag she could use. The closet itself was a whole other room, just as big as her actual bed room. She skimmed through the different suit cases on the shelves, mumbling to herself.
“Too big, too big, too small, too bright, perfect!” she shrieked, her eyes landing on a navy blue suit case, large enough to fit one person’s belongings. She dragged it down, off the shelf; it made a thud on the floor. Hoping that no one had heard her, she tossed it onto her king sized bed. Hazel didn’t really care which clothes she packed as she tossed various garments into her open suitcase. Jeans, tank tops and sneakers flew across the room as she tried to fit as much as she could into her case. She added her toothbrush and toothpaste as well as her hair brush.
Something in the right hand corner of the room caught her attention, the money jar. The ceramic jar designed to look like an ornament which contained $1000, to be used for emergencies; the same jar was placed in each room of the house. Hazel looked around for something heavy that she could smash it open with.
Hazel was about to grab her hair straightener when she got a better idea, grabbing the jar she closed the bathroom door and dropped the priceless ornament onto the cold, hard tiles. It made a sound as it shattered into a million tiny pieces. Hazel quickly grabbed the $100 bills off the ground and headed back to the closet, careful not to step on the tiny shards scattered all over the floor.
She stuffed half of the money into her pocket and the other half into the front zip pocket of her suit case. She clumsily zipped up her case and placed it on her cream coloured carpet.
Hazel subconsciously twirled her ringlets against her finger, looking for a pen. Back in her room, she jerked open the drawer on her study table and pulled out a note and pen. Hurriedly, she scribbled a message to the De Zilva family and placed it on her bed, resisting the urge to cry. She quickly threw on a hoody and zipped it up
Opening the door, Hazel let out a small gasp of surprise. She had completely forgotten that there were body guards everywhere. William raised his eyebrow, looking completely amused at Hazel’s horrified expression.
“Going somewhere Miss Hazel?” William asked, eyeing her suit case, amusement seeping into his voice.
Hazel looked at him horror-stricken. She debated if she could trust William or not. Taking a look around, she groaned. Wendy, Marlon, Andrew, Andre and Aaron’s body guards were watching her too.
“Promise you won’t tell anyone?” she whispered, with hopeful eyes. William just stared at her.
“Whatever they’ll find out soon enough anyway, I’m running away!” she replied, walking past William and the others with her suit case rolling behind her. She was held back by an arm on her shoulder, looking up she realized it was William.
“You do realize I can’t let you do this right?” asked William, taking his arm off her shoulder. Hazel was completely crazy if she thought she could get away with this.
“Look, Astra and Lisa only want me. Marlon, Wendy and the boys will be safe if I leave, they can go back to living a normal life. I don’t think any of us want a repeat of last time!” Hazel explained.
William didn’t want Hazel to leave; they had become good friends for the short time she had been staying at the Wake House. He would miss her blabbering on about how she hated Andre and how he thought the world revolved around him.
“Don’t you see? I have to leave!” she begged him to understand, she didn’t want to make this any harder than it already was. Hazel looked around making sure none of the De Zilva family was around.
“Ok then Miss Hazel, I hope I see you soon,” William said, concern reflecting off his chocolate brown eyes.
“I hope so too, but for the sake of everyone else, I hope I don’t,” Hazel replied, her voice going up a notch as she tried to keep her tears in. “Bye,” she managed to choke out, before pushing past William, her suit case rolling soundlessly behind her.

Looking around Hazel realized that the security was mostly on the outside of the Wake House. Heaving a sigh of relief, she tip-toed across the perfectly cut lawn. Everything was going well, she only needed to take a few steps until she reached the gate, but suddenly she was violently pulled back.
“Show yourself!” demanded an angry voice. Hazel slowly lifted the hood off her head, turning around to face the security guards. It was hard to make out who had stopped her. She squinted, but it didn’t do much.
“Miss Hazel? What are you doing here at this time of night?” asked the man, lowering his loaded gun.
“I’m running away and you can’t stop me. The only way the De Zilva family will be safe is if I leave, can you open the gate for me?” asked Hazel.
He looked at her unsurely; he had no idea what do to. The prime-Minister hadn’t given him any orders to keep her in, but running away wasn’t something he should let someone do. “Alright,” he finally answered with a sigh, he knew he would be in trouble for letting Hazel go.
Hazel’s eyes instantly lit up. “Good, because I wouldn’t have had any idea how to get past you if you had said no!” she exclaimed.
She followed the security guard to the gate, he typed in a certain code and the gate opened. Hazel was surprised; the code was at least twenty digits long, how could anyone remember it?
Hazel was out, no longer apart of the De Zilva family. She had been so hoping to have an amazing birthday with her new found family, but wasn’t going to happen anymore. She turned around once, mentally saying goodbye to the Wake House; she waved at the security guards. Taking a deep breath in and out she turned around and walked away.

Hazel was truly on her own now, no one to talk to, on one to annoy her, on one to protect her. She wondered if running away was the best thing to do, but then she reminded herself why she did it. Now the Marlon and his family would be safe.
She had no idea where she was going or how she could survive out on the streets, she always had everything provided for her at the orphanage, she never had to work to feed herself, she never had to do anything.
She knew she couldn’t stop walking, even though she had no clue where to go. She did have a map, but that wouldn’t be much use since she didn’t know where she needed to go. Maps told you how to get somewhere; Hazel wished someone had invented a device that could tell you where to go.
She sighed, but kept walking. The cold winter air making her breath frosty; as she breathed it looked like she was smoking. She felt isolated, she wanted to cry, but knew it wouldn’t do her any good. Hazel sucked in a breath to prevent herself from crying.
Hazel was truly alone now, no turning back, who knew what would happen to her? There was nowhere for her to go, she didn’t know anyone at Wake Summer Island, Lisa and Astra were coming for her, she couldn’t go back to the Wake House. She was truly stranded.
For the first time in her life she felt helpless.
