Chapter One

Nina was the first one up this morning. Usually, on this day, she would wake up Elena with the smell of her birthday breakfast, but today wasn't going to be like that. "Hey, I made coffee you want some?" She smiled as Aunt Jenna made her way towards me with a cup of steaming hot coffee.

"Aunt Jenna-"

"Nina, you ok?" Nina's head snapped up towards Alaric who was suddenly standing where Aunt Jenna had been. She was hallucinating.

"Um yeah I'm fine" Nina took the coffee he offered her and sat at on a stool next to the kitchen island. He went back and neatly folded the blankets he used. Nina sighed and put the mug down "Are you sure you're comfortable sleeping on the couch?" Ric had been staying at the Gilbert house because the teens had no adult supervision. With Elena gone the house felt empty to the gilbert twins. Jeremy seemed to be even more protective of his twin sister.

"Yea, yea I'm good," he said looking up at Nina like she was joking.

"You've been sleeping on it the whole summer. If you need your own bedroom-" She offered the feeling of guilt overwhelming her.

"And sleep in your dead parent's room... or my dead girlfriend's room, no thanks" he was quick to decline her offer once again.

"Alright, I got it," Nina said and handed him the steaming hot coffee she had just brewed. She turned around to go clean the dishes from last night but Ric suddenly stopped her.

"You should go check on Damon," he says and Nina didn't argue.

"Ok um can you please wake up Jeremy while I'm gone? I don't want him to be late on the first day on the job" Ric put a thumbs up reassuring her.

Nina made her way to Elena's car and quickly turned on the heat. She had gotten her license this summer and so did Jeremy so they could drive without having to depend on anyone.

Nina's POV

"Morning" I hear his deep and seductive voice from behind me.

"Morning" I turn around and see him smiling at me.

I took the paper out of my pocket and handed it to Damon. "Sheriff Forbes gave us another location to check" His smile turned into a frown. "Memphis"

"Another dead end, you mean?" He walked past me and sat on the couch.

"You don't know that Damon" Every time I'm closer to finding Elena and Stefan he just tries to shoot me down.

"You know what? You're right this could be the one. After two months this could be the clue that tells us Stefan is alive and living in Graceland" I scoffed and turned to leave.

"Fine I'll do it alone" Suddenly Damon was in front of me. His faces inches from mine his eyes squinting down at me.

"And Let Klaus know you're tracking him? He thinks you're dead Nina I won't let him find out you're not" He pushed my hair behind my ear making me sigh and close my eyes.

"Damon we haven't had one in a while" I moved back from his hand.

"Okay. I'll check it out" he nodded "if I find anything I'll call you"

"Bu-" My phone vibrated in my pocket but Damon didn't move from my side. "Hey Caroline"

"Hey, girl you better not be busy because I'm at the grill right now and a double cheeseburger with fries is calling your name," she said in a giddy voice.

"Is Tyler with you?" I ask and she goes silent.

"So is that a no?" She asked sadly.

"I'll be there in 10," I said and hung up.
