Chapter 2: Everything or Nothing

I turned around quickly and bumped my head against my boyfriend of one year's. Austin grinned at me.

"Hi beautiful," he says and kisses me sweetly on my cheek.

"I'll leave you two alone to talk," Kenna comments sarcastically and wanders off in the hallways moving towards the guy she's always had a crush on, Beck. He still doesn't know that Ken has a crush on him and Ken would kill us before we told him. Tory and I have tried to tell him many times when Ken's not around but right at the moment we try to talk to him he says he's busy and will talk to us later. He doesn't seem like a nice guy to me or Tory but Ken won't understand.

"Hey Austin," I try to sound as excited as possible offering him a fake smile hoping he believes it.

Austin was never my guy, he just thought we were the best couple and I was the best girl for him. I tried to break up with him many times but I was stopped from the guilt that would haunt me after breaking his heart since he believes he loves me so much.

The first bell (warning bell) for the first class rings and I realise that if I don't leave for physics now, I'll either get a detention or a LONG lecture from Mr. Walter a.k.a 'peabrain'! That's what the entire class calls him behind his back because of his pea sized brain which gives him the ability to call us all names, and believe me they're not pretty ones. Even though I don't care about him calling me names or just a stupid detention that I can escape easily, I really don't feel like staying with Austin for even a second more. I don't know why it's so different this year even though it's the same people and same university. I just don't feel like it's my birthday and this stupid feeling of something wrong happening is not leaving me alone. It's just a feeling right? Like come on it's my eighteenth birthday what bad could happen other than my parents not gifting me anything. That's already happened so I guess its just that I'm a bit disappointed. Ok, so back to Austin. I escape his arms and rush to my class waving at him leaving him confused since he knows I've never been scared of Mr. Walter like all the other students in physics class who literally start trembling when Mr.Walter steps towards them.

During physics, we were given lectures about the principles of this school and the first chapter of physics. We almost finished the first chapter since it was mostly a repeat of what we did last year. This stuff always happens on the first day of a new year.

As soon as I sat down, I drifted off into my own world, because, like come on, we took all of this already and - not to brag or anything - I got the highest in my grade. I started thinking about my birthday, my parents, school, and Austin, until a hand slammed down onto my desk.

"Ms. McKennel, if you're not too busy, could you tell me what Newton's First Law is about?" Mr. Walker sneered down at me. Ha, too bad for him, I'm actually really good at these sorts of questions.

"It's basically inertia. And just for the record, I was busy. You should be glad I even took my time to come to class," I smirked proudly as I heard snickers all around the classroom. Mr. Walker's face flushed crimson in embarrassment.

"You learn to control your tongue around me Ms. McKennel, or you'll end up with an entire week of detentions," he spluttered furiously. Ha, as if I'd even go! He and I both knew I'd never go, and he wouldn't do anything about it.

The rest of the day passed in a blur, and I decided that maths was still the bane of my existence, and my favourite teachers hadn't changed a bit during summer. At the end of the day, I waited outside Austin's class and smiled at my other friends. When Austin finally came out and saw me, he grinned and pecked my lips. "Hey babe, " he said warmly, "D'you need me to drop you home?"

"Yeah. That's okay, right?" I know what everyone's thinking. Why would I act like such a bitch toward such an 'adoring' boyfriend? Well, he isn't. The way he acts in public is just for the sake of popularity and his 'golden-boy' reputation. Why am I with him, you ask? Call me a masochist, but I really do care about him, and I think he cares for me too, even if it is just a little bit.

"'Course it is. I wanted to know, are you free at eight?" he looked at me expectantly. He was obviously expecting me to agree. With Austin, there was no 'no' or 'maybe'. I had to agree with him completely, or he'd go off into a sulk and ignore him, then he'd expect me to apologise. Then again, I guess it's kind of my fault for putting up with it in the first place.

"Uh yeah I am. Why?"

He smirked at me knowingly and said, "Guess who's taking you out for dinner on your birthday." Oh gee, I don't know, Santa Claus and his reindeer? Maybe Anna and Kristoff from Erendale? Would it kill him to not tell me what we're doing? I actually like surprises, you know.

"Oh my gosh! Babe you didn't have to do that for me!" I exclaimed, smiling fakely as we climbed in his BMW.

"Hey, it's your birthday, isn't it? I'm supposed to spoil you," he said starting the car.

After a-kind-of-awkward twenty minute silence, we reached my house. "I'll pick you up at seven-thirty sharp. Wear something small. And black. You look hot in black." Huh. I guess chivalry really is dead. I smiled and waved goodbye as I got out of the car.

As I walked home, I heard someone waking behind me. I turned around and was confronted by a fifty-something-year old man. "Good evening. Are you Ms. McKennel?" he said in a Chinese accent. I nodded my head and he continued, "The car Mr. McKennel ordered has been parked in your garage. The keys are in this envelope along with a message from your father. If you have any problems with the car, the number of our showroom is on the back of the envelope. Have a good evening, Miss."

I blinked in astonishment as he rapidly walked away. What did he mean 'car'? Did that mean...? No. No way! A flood of excitement ran through my body as I practically ripped the envelope to shreds, a silver and black key with the classic McLaren symbol fell into my eager hands. The McLaren was my dream car. God knows how many times I had left hints of wanting it for my birthday. I'd leave pictures of it everywhere my parents could see. I raced to the garage and found a big, white cloth hiding something. I held my breath and with a quick flick of my wrist, removed the the cloth. A stunning, deep blue McLaren greeted my eyes. I dropped the cloth and rushed towards the driver's seat. I quickly pressed the starting button on the key, and a chirp resounded around the empty garage. I dove into the driver's seat and revved up the engine, and it roared. I laughed in delight as I felt the seat vibrate. The interior of the car was absolutely gorgeous. The seats were black leather, and there was a digital A.C, touchscreen radio, as well as a high class surround system.

I quickly pulled out my iPhone 6 to call Austin. I wish I could see his face when I'd tell him I got a McLaren. As I was dialing his number, an incoming call from an unknown number.

"Hello? Who is this?" I asked in an uncertain voice.

"Is this Ms. McKennel?" an unfamiliar voice asked. A sudden spike of fear ran through me.

"Um, yeah? Is there a problem?"

"This is Officer Leonard. I'm sorry to say this, but Mr and Mrs McKennel were in a severe car accident, and are now in critical condition."

A gasp got stuck in my throat, and I dropped my phone on the granite floor of the garage.
