Today was Sirius' birthday. Or it would have been if he wasn't dead. Remus didn't bother getting out of bed, instead just staring blankly at the ceiling for hours, feeling empty. The day passed slowly, but it was dark outside by the time Remus headed to the kitchen to eat. He hadn't eaten in days and his stomach was waiting to be fed. The kitchen was cold and empty, mirroring the black abyss inside Remus. He reminisced how this kitchen was once filled with laughter and happiness, a stark contrast between the silence Remus now sat in.

This time last year some of Sirius' closest friends gathered to celebrate his birthday. Remus remembered sitting next to Sirius as they ate, hands locked together in Sirius' lap. Remus could recall how fidgety Sirius had been which, as it turned out, was because he had planned to propose. Remus relived the absolute elation and relief that washed over his fiancé's face when he had said "yes!" and how Sirius burst into joyous tears, relieved that he hadn't been rejected. Remus remembered how blissful that moment had been, curled in Sirius' embrace; the immense sadness he felt now was unfathomable.
