Jake isn't from a rich family. They have very little money, and struggle a lot. Jake feels like a burden in his family, even though he is reminded every day how important he is in the home. His parents do everything they can to make sue he feels safe, and protected. They may have very little money, but they all have rich hearts. They always say 'i love you' and never forget to hug before anything. Jake knows he is lucky to have his family, and he tries not to take advantage of it. He knows his family has little, that's why he has learned to appreciate everything, no matter how small. Since he is blind, he says 'thank you' many times throughout the day. Even if someone kindly reminds him of which way to turn on a street, he says thank you at least twice. He never forgets to be thankful. He also learned, at a very young age, sometimes people don't have enough heart to help. There has been many times when someone will completely ignore him, or walk away while he is talking. He hears the laughs. He can feel the starring. He often has to find safe places to be alone to cry. He knows the world isn't kind. That's why he tries his best to be kind no matter who he is around. Even if they kick him down, or even left him in the street trying to cross safely, he could never hold a grudge on someone. His heart is too pure. Unfortunately...that's why he has been hurt too much. But he promises to never change.

Often in school, he can hear people whispering as he slowly makes his way through the halls. He has to walk against the wall so he can feel for his classrooms, but people will refuse to move, and he often gets lost. Even though the staff knows he is blind, and sees the awful things people do, he somehow gets blamed for the things people force him to do. When the bell rings, and he hasn't found his room, an officer will yell at him to hurry along. He often hides in the bathroom to cry. Most of his days consist of thousands of tears. He wishes he could see, not only the world, but himself. Its not narcissistic, he wants to know. He has never seen himself. Or his family. Or colors. Or birds. Nothing. He knows he is tall, with deep brown hair. He knows he has freckles like his father. He knows he has ivory eyes like his mother. He knows trees are tall, and green. He knows, because his parents explain everything to him. But, he can't see it. It's almost like a faint memory when someone describes anything to him. But he smiles, and says he understands, because he couldn't bare to be a bother anymore than he already feels he is.

He spends his life only asking things people seem to miss. "How tall is that tree?" "Is the store full of people?" "Is the crosswalk busy?" "Are there any animals or people in my way?" Sometimes people don't want to be rude, but they don't understand that he needs to know. He wants to see the world through someone else's eyes, since he can't see through his own. He wants to sit in the grass and have someone describe the whole world around them. He wants them to tell a story about the world they see. But he doesn't want to ask. He doesn't want to be a bother. He wants to ask, he wants someone to talk to other than his parents. He enjoys their short guide through the world, but they never have time to sit for a whole day, and tell him the world. But he understands. He knows they need to make money, to support their small home. So he sits back and makes up his own little world in his mind.
