"Tobias Eaton!" A man with light, sandy hair, deep blue eyes, and a pale complexion to match, stood in front of one of the many plain doors lining the walls. Tobias looked up at the sound of his name, the harsh lighting casting a gleam on his own pale face. He gazed around the room slowly, knowing exactly what he was supposed to do. He had just watched twenty or so kids like him be pulled into the distant rooms so that their minds could be exploited, but he still didn't feel ready. This was the moment that could, no would, determine his future, and though he had waited sixteen painstakingly long years, he felt like he needed time to freeze for ten more.
"Tobias Eaton!" The man was scanning the room now, as if he knew exactly what Tobias looked like. One of the kids next to him, a Dauntless boy, snickered as he whispered to his friends around him. Tobias ignored the boy and turned the other way.
"Hey. Isn't that your name?" He asked Tobias mockingly, as if he wouldn't know his own name. Sadly, Tobias was caught off guard. He hadn't thought that anyone even knew him there in the room full of other kids his age who hadn't taken the test yet. "You should go." One of the girls next to him was smiling widely, though for what, he didn't know. He got up and slowly walked towards the blonde-haired man.
The man gave a slight look of relief when he saw Tobias stand, before he shouldered the door open and waited for him to pass through it. As he did, he kept his head down, a mutual sign of respect in Abnegation. Unfortunately, his test administrator was a Dauntless member, so he didn't know why she wasn't saying anything. "I'm just going to have you sit in this chair here, and then I'll put on the few restraints before we continue any further. So if you would please sit here?" She was motioning to the dentist-like, faded yellow chair in front of Tobias with a large restraint resting where he knew his head would lie. He silently swallowed before he clambered into the lumpy chair, gripping the edges of the seat hard.
"What is this going to do exactly?" Tobias asked as the Dauntless woman dressed in black flicked the needle to release any air trapped inside. He had never been afraid of needles, so he wasn't intimidated by this one that seemed to be thicker than normal. The woman glanced over at him and raised an eyebrow, before she flicked the needle one more time and set it down.
"These restraints are for your protection. That is all," she replied without missing a beat. As the woman leaned forward to fasten the restraint around his head in place, Tobias caught sight of her name.
"Tori?" He asked carefully. He was never allowed to address an adult directly, which he realized with a cringe, was exactly what he was doing. But then, he tried to remind himself that he may not be Abnegation tomorrow.
Tori looked over to meet his eyes slowly. Tobias could tell that she didn't trust easily. "You will go through a series of challenges produced by the serum." She started to hook up small wires with suction cups on the ends to his head. "These will record your reactions and transmit them into this computer. From there, it will evaluate your choices and place you into your destined faction." As Tori spoke, she sounded bored. There was a lazy twitch in her eye before she finished attaching the last wire and checked all the restraints.
She strode over to the small cart where she had left the needle, grabbed the object carefully, turned, and paced back. Tobias watched Tori cautiously as she raised the needle, gave it one last flick causing the gooey, orange substance inside to move slightly, before she plunged the needle into his left forearm. Tobias flinched slightly before the world started to go black around him.
