Alexis
"Hello?"
"Lexi? James here."
"Oh, James." I suddenly felt freshly excited after hearing my lawyer's voice. "Thank God you call back. Guess what just Thomas did. So he agreed to have Jeremiah the other night, but then he decided to left me in the lurch. And hear this, he wants to fucking revisit the settlement! We might end up back in the court!"
"Alexis, calm yourself down." James unhurried tones greet me. Sometimes I wish James spoke a bit faster. Especially that I'm paying him by the hour. "We'll sort it. Don't worry yourself okay?"
"It's just that he's so frustrating."
"I hear you. Try to forget about it. You gotta stop stressing yourself, Lexi."
Is he serious?
"I've written about it. I can email it to you."
"Lexi, you don't need to keep a copy of every single incident."
"I should have! Come on, talk about unreasonable behavior. If the judge knew what he was like---"
"Listen to me, the judge does know what he's like."
"But---"
"What have I told you about your Divorce Vision?"
I suddenly become silent. The way he can read my mind, I hate it. I've known him since college, and although he costs a bit expensive even on mates' rates, I never considered going to anyone else.
"It will never happen, " I mumble finally, staring at my fingernails.
"Your own vision of your divorce will never happen, " he said with emphasis. "The judge doesn't have time reading a two-hundred-page copy on Thomas' shortcomings in court, while a crowd boo at your ex-husband. The judge will never start his summing up, 'Ms. Powell, you are a saint to be able to put up with such an evil scumbag and I thus award you everything you want.'"
I can't help imagining. Except in my version, the crowd throws bottles at Thomas too.
"Look, Lexi, your ex-husband will never admit to being wrong, " James presses on harshly. "Thomas will never stand in front of the judge, weeping and begging, 'Alexis, please forgive me.' The papers will not report your divorce with the headline: TOTAL DICKHEAD ADMITS FULL SHITTINESS IN COURT."
I can't help half-snorting with laughter. "I do know that."
"Are you sure about that Lexi?" James sounds doubtful. "You have to understand, Thomas will never realize anything. He'll never admit to being a terrible human being. I could spend a thousand hours in this case, it would still never happen."
I can feel a ball of frustration. " But it's so unfair. He is a terrible human being."
"We know. He's a piece of shit. Don't dwell yourself on him. Flush him out of your life."
"It's not that easy," I mutter a pause.
"I didn't say it was easy, " says James more gently.
There's silence for a while. I stare at my office clock, watching the hand tick around. At last, I slump right down, resting my head in the crook of my elbow.
"God, divorce."
"Man's greatest invention, " says James.
"You know, I wish I could just... I dunno." I sigh heavily. "Wave a magic wand boom our marriage never happened."
James chuckles. "You want an annulment, that's what you want."
"Is that a real thing? An annulment?" I stare at the phone suspiciously.
