Tug of War
Like the taut, quiver'n rope over a tug-of-war mud hole,
The struggle to discover peace
Requires a balance of strengths
To find... and to keep....
On the one side, then the other,
Will vs Courage,
Intent vs Action.
We, together,
Balance the quiver'n ribbon
Over the mud hole of man's
Apathy and Distraction.
We walk slowly,
With purpose,
To our positions.
I look you directly in the eye,
My opposition,
And my ally.
The rope is at rest,
Seemingly lifeless,
Straight and strong,
We choose our teams.
I choose King Kong
Brutish ape
From his strength there's no escape
Chosen for his gentle compassion
You choose Anne Frank
For her gentle heart's forgiveness.
I choose Bob Geldoff
He showed us anything is possible
You choose Mohammad Ali
For his exultation of faith's endurance
I choose Nelson Mandella
The heart of forgiveness
Turns the other cheek
You choose Will Rogers
For his unconditional love
And refusal to judge.
I choose Florence Nightingale
Inclusive and healing
For feeding sore heart's hunger
You choose William Wilberforce
So others may know how
Determined love was meant to be.
I choose Mary Poppins
For teaching about love's backbone.
You choose Piglet
For his innocence and wonder
I choose Sacho Louis Armstrong
Now we haz real jazz
For when he sings
What a wonderful
I believe it can be.
It's Time!
Lift up the rope
Take up the slack
Pull together
And watch the ribbon quiver.
