Wendy Testaburger - March 19, 2004
Class flew by in a flash, As I stared out the window across the room. I kept glancing at Kyle, who was staring at the clock above the doorway. How was I so naive in the beginning? It was so obvious...How am I going to tell him without putting myself in danger?
I know that telling Kyle about him is a dangerous risk, but I'm willing to make this grave sacrifice to help him. I continued to stare out the window until the ear-piercing ring of the bell pulled me back into reality.
I quickly stood up, fixed my skirt, then grabbed my books and headed out the door. As I had expected, Bebe was waiting at my locker when I arrived.
"What do you want, Bebe." I opened my locker without taking my eyes off of her. She smiled mischievously, as I stacked my books in my locker with a scowl plastered on my face.
"Oh, nothing really. Just a simple favor is all." She leaned against the locker next to mine, still smiling evilly.
"Fuck off, Bebe. I'm not going to help you with some stupid scheme to bully your ex." I slammed my locker shut and began to walk away.
"This is where you're wrong, Wendy. It's about Token and Nicole." I stopped.
"What do you mean?" I slowly turned to face her. Her smile widened, as she tapped her long, crimson-painted nails on the locker next to mine.
"What do you think? They broke up a few weeks ago because Nicole's new friends pressured her into thinking he was a bad influence. They still love each other, but they don't know it. And I need your help to fix that, Wendy. I already got Red to join in."
Red? I haven't talked to her since 6th grade, along with Nicole. But it would be nice to reunite the old squad...
"I'll help. When is this going to start?" Bebe just laughed, then smiled.
"Right now, duh! Meet me at table 40 after you get your lunch." Then, she walked off. I walked quietly to the lunchline and stood in silence until I had my lunch. I walked out of the line, then stopped.
I scanned the room until I spotted Bebe and Red sitting at table 40. I quickly walked over, waved hello and sat down.
"Red, It's been awhile, hasn't it?" Red just laughed and nodded.
"So, what's the plan, Bebe?" Red turned to face Bebe who was looking at her nails.
"Alright, girls. It'll start out with Red distracting Nicole's new friends, the Wendy and I will get Nicole to join us at the park. At the park, Token will be waiting with a bouquet of roses and chocolates for her. Got it?"
Red and I nodded, then shouted: "Got it!". The lunch bell rang, then we all stood up and ran out the door. This is the first time I've ever skipped, so Bebe had to help me out with hiding from teachers and dodging the cameras views.
As we ran farther and farther away from the school, the abandoned, overgrown walkway to the park was getting closer and closer. We ran down the path, occasionally looking behind us to see if the teachers had caught us yet. But luckily, not a single teacher was in sight.
Red was already talking to Nicole's friends, so Bebe and I had to get Nicole to the park. Wait, why did we run here first then? Shouldn't we have brought Nicole with us?
"Um, Bebe? What about Nicole?" Bebe stopped, then turned to face me.
"Don't worry. I came here to get Token. We'll get Nicole in just a minute." I sighed with relief, then continued to follow Bebe into the park.
"Token? You can come out now!" Token emerged from the bushed by the bench, clutching a bouquet of roses that was half covering the yellow 'T' that was stitched on his purple sweater. He fixed his black hair, with obvious amounts of worry in his eyes.
"Is Nicole here yet?"
His brown eyes glistened with worry, as he anxiously fiddled with the sleeves of his sweater. Bebe opened her mouth to speak, but she was cut off by the sound of footsteps.
"Token! Hide!" Bebe aggressively shoved Token behind the bench, then grabbed my wrist and speed-walked to the sign across the basketball court and ducked behind it. I quickly ducked as well, then poked my head out from behind the sign.
Red, who was dragging Nicole behind her, jumped out from the half-covered trail, then stopped.
"Uh, Why did you take me here, anyway?" Nicole began to fiddle with the zipper of her yellow coat, as her pink skirt swayed with the wind.
"You'll see." Red chuckled, then walked away from Nicole, and over to us. Nicole wasn't looking, so Red quickly ducked behind the sign next to me. Nicole looked around, smoothed her black hair, which was pulled up into two buns that were held up by yellow bows.
Then, to Nicole's surprise, Token jumped out from behind the bench with a bouquet of roses in hand. He quickly handed them to her, as silence consumed the park.
"I-I still love you, Nicole. I just wanted you to know that. And I'm sorry for whatever I did that caused you to break up with me. I-I'll try to make it up to you, okay?"
Nicole just stared, then broke into a smile.
"I love you too, dummy." She gladly accepted the bouquet of roses, as we all watched from behind the little bench. Our plan had worked.
The rest of the day went by fast, as all my worries had thrown into the back of my mind. I was too busy catching up with Red, Bebe, and Nicole to even think about my problems. That was until the final bell rang. It all came flooding back...
"Him. I forgot about him."
I frantically ran to the park across the street, as my hands shook uncontrollably. I could barely run because of how much my stomach ached from worry.
I stopped at the park bench and sat down to catch my breath, as the sound of leaves rustling in the breeze echoed throughout the empty park. That's when I heard it. Footsteps, coming closer from behind me.
I froze in place, as I scanned the space around me for a sign of life. Then...
"Hey, Wendy."
I jumped, as Kyle appeared from behind me. What a relief!
"Oh, hey Kyle! About the whole talk thing..." Was this the right decision? What if he catches me in the act? But this is for a good cause. I'm saving Kyle.
"Yea? What about it?" Kyle looked worried, yet impatient. He's always had a short attention span.
"Well, It's about Eric. He's been...well...Sta-"
Pain clouded my senses as something- or someone aggressively hit me with full force. Kyle... He looked so scared...Then, I caught a glimpse of him. Eric. He was wielding a bat and had a murderous gleam in his savage eyes.
He was wearing all black and was extremely hard to recognize. Kyle didn't seem to catch on to who Eric was, but I surely did. Eric chased Kyle away, then turned back to me.
"Wrong choice, Testaburger."
