She was my best friend. One of my only friends . And then one day, she was gone...
1 day before
"Hurry up Madds!" I hollered back to Maddy. "We are going to be late for our first day of high school!" "I'm running as fast as I can Veronica!" She yelled, her dark brown hair, whipping in her face, trying to catch up to me.
Maddy and I have been the best of friends, ever since I can remember. Her mom, Rebecca Smith, and my mom, Joyce Laurence, have been inseparable since middle school; so naturally, we became friends at a very young age.
Running up the weather worn pavement, hearts beating fast from excitement, we saw many students walking with each other, talking and smiling.
As we ran past them and through the freshly polished gates, we suddenly stopped in astonishment, staring at our new school. " Welcome to Santa Monica High School" read a maroon and gold banner, hanging above the entrance to the building.
As we made our way closer to the entrance, we watched as all of the other high school students walked into the two widely opened doors to the main part of the school. Maddy and I, books, in hand, followed the other students inside, into the tile paved hallways, with mat grey metal locker on either side of the walls.
There was hundreds of people crowding the already small halls, trying to find each of their lockers, or trying to find their friends. As Maddy and I made our way to our lockers, and were dropping off our things, a group of what seemed like senior girls , in maroon and gold cheerleading uniforms came walking past us.
I turned to put the last of my books into my dark, cold, locker, as I heard a big thud, and turned to see Maddy bending down to pick up her secondhand school books from off the ground, while the group of girls stood over her, "didn't see you there freshie" said a tall, lean, girl, with her platinum blonde hair in a tight, ponytail with a large, sparkly, gold bow. As the girls walked away laughing and giggling, I bent down to help Maddy with her books, "great way to start freshman year" she said, as she put away her things, "It'll get better" I told her, trying to sound enthusiastic while yelling over the loud bell that meant the start of first period. "I hope" said Maddy under her breath, as we headed to our first class, history.
