History has never been my favorite subject, so time moved slowly while I doodled in the margins of my book, creating little figures that seemed to dance around on my page.
Tucking my dirty blonde hair behind my ear, I looked up from my drawings and stared out the window that stretched across the long wall of the history room, and was met with the fine sand of the the Santa Monica beach of California, outstretched for miles. I always felt at home when I'm at the beach, something about how the cool sand felt between my toes, or how the oceans waves would meet the sandy shore. Maybe it was how the sun would set, casting colors from orange and pink, to blues and purples across the sky.
I remembered how Maddy and I would go to the beach each weekend and sit in the sand, watching the waves come and go, talking about our day, or the gossip that was floating around in our school at the time, until, finally, the sun would set, and we would walk home.
"Miss.Laurence" called my history teacher, Mrs.Patterson, "Miss.Laurence!" Finally, I was jogged out of my thoughts. As I regained focuses; I became highly aware that all of the thirty or so students in the class were staring at me. One in particular caught my eye, and made me feel uneasy. His sharp, ocean blue eyes tearing deeper into my soul each second.
"I'm sorry, am I boring you?" She asked. "N-n-no" I stammered, turning my focus to her. "Not at all".
Luckily, the loud school bell rang just before Mrs.Patterson could say anything else on the matter. I hastily grabbed my stuff as I pulled Maddy out of the room.
The rest of the day went by pretty smoothly, until the bell rang for dismissal.
"Ugh, could have first period gone any worse!" I said as I pulled my belongings out from my locker. Smiling, Maddy pulled me out the main doors. "Come on V, let's go get some coffee" she laughed.
As I sat at the dark wood table at "Johnathan's Coffee Shop", with words and drawing etched into it, waiting for Maddy to return with my drink, I couldn't stop thinking about those eyes. It was like they were burned into my memory.
"One iced chai latte with a shot of espresso" said Maddy, handing me my coffee. "Ugh" she said. "I forgot to get straws!" "Don't worry, I'll get them. I want to get some whipped cream anyway" I said smiling. "Thanks!" Called Maddy as I walked away heading towards the counter.
As I wasn't paying attention to where I was going, I turned around with my coffee and straws in hand, and accidentally poured my drink downed the front of a tall muscular figure. "I'm so sorry!" I said as I looked up and was unexpectedly met with the same, sharp, ocean blue eyes that have been engraved in my memory since that morning.
