"Oh, I see you've found my sweet Bella. She's due any day now." I said gaining back my confidence.
Thomas looked back with a boyish grin. "Please, I would very much like to be here when she does. I've always been fascinated with birth." Thomas said turning back as he reached out his hand to let Bella sniff his palm. Bella pushed her snout up into his hand seeking a sweet treat.
"Here, she wants this," I said as I withdrew an apple and small knife from the basket after I had set it on the shelf beside me. "I normally bring her an apple that she and I share while I sit and read." I started to slice up the apple into 8ths. On the last slice the knife slips and cuts my thumb. "Ouch! Oh damnations!"
Thomas reacted in a flash, withdrawing a handkerchief and wrapping it around my thumb to stop the bleeding. "You really should be more careful. It would be a shame to scar your hands." Thomas tutted at me as he used the hand with the cut to lead me to a stool, gently forcing me to sit. "Now let me see. Hmmm, its not too deep. I'll just wrap it up and I shall take you to the young Doctor from last night, Allen, he can tell us just how bad it is." As he is talking, Thomas takes the handkerchief and rips it into four strips and wraps my thumb back up.
"There really is no need. I've spent enough time reading all of Allen's medical books, I know it's not deep and that so long as I keep it clean and wrapped, I'll heal just fine." Smiling reassuringly, I stood and picked up the basket and blanket off the shelf. "Now lets be off. I very much wish to go for a walk and picnic. No, don't try to argue." I interrupted him before he could do more than open his mouth to try and convince me to go see Allen.
"I was only going to say, that if you were sure it's not too bad, then a picnic and walk sound wonderful. Only, please allow me to carry the basket. It's the least I can do as a gentleman."
"Well I suppose if you insist I won't deny you the honor. But do be warned, it's quite heavy." As I handed over the picnic basket full of food I remembered the apple that I had been cutting for bella. "Just a moment !"After putting the apple in Bella feed bucket we left to find the perfect place for out walk and lunch. After a bit of discussion, we finally settled on Central Park. We found that we had the same passion for learning, we enjoyed the same foods, and I learned he was quite the seasoned traveler. I voiced my desire to go off and visit places I had only ever read about in books. He talked in depth about places he had visited that I hoped to some day visit. By the time we stopped to have our picnic, we had been walking around the park for nearly three hours.
"I do believe that tree over there, is by far the best spot for a picnic." nodding to a very large old tree atop a small hill. I led the way, getting a burst of energy I flew up the hill as if i had wings on my feet like the Greek messenger god.
