I wake up the next morning with a clear mind.

I can't let Kerek in it's just not in my nature. I can't just turn away from everything I've ever known..

I push back my covers and slide my legs over the edge of the bed. I quietly jump down and get dressed trying hard not to wake the others. I am getting ready for training again since it is only my second night here. We get trained for the first week then they throw us out in to this without any other support.

I quickly and quietly slip on the navy jumpsuit they gave me and pick up my shovel in my right hand.  I am about to turn towards the door when I see two blue orbs staring at me out of the corner of my eye. I slowly turn my body to the left and am met by two large, empty, blue eyes. Kerek... I languidly creep over to his bunk, watching every slow step. Hesitantly, I kneel down until we are face to face. Is he...sleeping? Is that even possible? I lift my right hand and rapidly wave it in front of his face, but he does nothing. He does not even twitch. Creepy...

I carefully stand up and then dash towards the door with my shovel trying to forget the empty look his eyes held as he slept.

As I walk into the gymnasium I am horrified to find that the training session has gotten worse... much worse. I whip my head in every direction staring at each obstacle with wide eyes and my mouth opened so wide I could catch flies.

In the right corner of the room there is a rabid dog savagely snarling at me with large teeth and white foam dripping from his mouth. Just above his head are three steel hoops that have been set on fire but never seem to burn. In the other corner are a couple of armed robots that have been modeled to look like Vixens and in middle a giant pool reaches across the rest of the room.

"Alright, so you will start over there," says LT Brant distracting me from my awed stare.  He was gesturing to the right side of the pool.

"And then you will end over there," finishes LT Brad pointing to the opposite side of the pool.

"You will repeat this obstacle until you can get through it in 10 minutes," they say in chorus with a sly smile plastered on each of their faces.

I stand there mouth a gape, eyes wide staring at the twins for half a second. You have to be kidding me! It is a stretch to do this obstacle once let alone repeating it until i get it under ten minutes! Breath... I have to be strong... I can't show them my weakness... I Must Be Strong!

I straighten my back and before I can think twice I run full speed towards the pool and nose dive into the clear, blue water. Oh my God this water is cold!! The chill of the water slows me down for half a second but I soon get used to it and shred through the icy water with no problems. When I get to the edge of the pool the rabid dog is still snarling at me viciously yanking on it's chain trying to get free. I feel as if I am about to freeze up with fear but I know I cannot stop now. I only have 10 minutes.

As I climb out of the pool the dogs teeth look bigger and his growls are louder and by the time I get close to him I have thought up a plan. I run over to the wall on my right, jump as high as I can and forcefully push myself off the wall. I reach the pointed end of my shovel out towards the ceiling and slash through the strings that are holding up the flaming hoops. They hit the ground with a crash and surround the dog with flames just enough to distract him.

I land in a squatting position but quickly rise, running over to get a bullet proof vest. I jump back into the water to swim over to my next obstacle but it is harder to swim with the vest. It's heavy and I can feel it dragging me down as I gasp for air. Air... my lungs need air... swim faster.... faster.... Just as I feel I may give up the adrenaline kicks in. If I stop they will let me drown and I have to get through this in order to come out strong. I don't want to live in this society sometimes...but I can't die a weakling... My legs kick faster and I put more strength behind each kick.

Eventually, I hit something hard. I look up. The wall... thank God...My arms feel like jello as I try to push myself out of the pool but that is the least of my problems as a bullet speeds past my head and into the water. Was that a real bullet...? I know the answer to the question immediately after it crosses my mind. Of course it is. They don't care if I die in hear that's just another kid they don't have to worry about. Another bullet whizzes past my head and I am broken out of my trance. I race straight towards the robots. If I die this way at least I look brave. The pops of bullets ring through my head as they zoom past me. A couple of them land in my chest but I push past the impact letting it drive me. My ear gets clipped and I feel the warm trickle of blood run down my face but I do not stop... I can't stop.

I reach the robots and my vision begins to blur. I slash and thrash knocking guns out of their hands but I am not fully present. Adrenaline is the only thing pushing me and as I come to the last robot I do not even feel like I control my body anymore. The pointed end of my shovel impales the last dummy and after that my eyes are overcome with stars and I lose the last source of my consciousness.
