****Jane's POV****

"Dude, you can't be seen with me in that shirt!" Olivia said, punching my arm as we walked into the school building. Olivia Benson was my best friend, and had been since freshman year. We both bonded over never fitting in with any of the other girls, which is expected considering that both Olivia and I are practically one of the boys.

"Please, the Red Sox are the best team in the MLB East! You should consider yourself lucky to be seen with me in this shirt!" I responded.

"Nah, Janie! No self-respecting New Yorker would ever be caught dead sporting a Red Sox tee. Remind me to give you one of my Yankees tees."

"Well, as a Bostonian turned New Yorker, I think I have the right to my Red Sox merch. Besides, maybe you should get with the winning team, Liv." I smirked. I was born and raised in Boston, but my family and I moved to New York after my father found a job that would pay better than his gig as a plumber did back in Boston. So, I had been living in New York since I was 13.....but I always repped Boston because Boston made me who I was.

"Winning? Says who?"

"Says the MLB East standings, sis. Red Sox are ranked 1st in the East, and Yankees ranked 2nd. You know what they say about second place, though.....2nd placers are the first losers." I teased.

"The only reason the Sox are ranked first is because they've played more games than the Yankees, which gives them three more wins than the Yankees." Olivia told me, taking off her jacket and revealing her Yankees t-shirt.

"They play each other Sunday night. We'll see who's the best then, Benson."

"I guess we will, Rizzoli." Olivia chuckled.

"Anyway, how's it going with that hazel-eyed cutie? What's her name? Maria? Maureen?" she continued, changing the subject.

"Her name is Maura, and honestly? I haven't talked to her yet." I sighed. Maura Isles was the new girl in my Human Anatomy and Physiology class, and she was partially the reason why I was struggling a little in the class. She was so beautiful, and smart.....and I'd find myself a little distracted by her in class.

"Well, why not?"

"Because, how do I know if she's gay? And even if she is, why in the hell would she ever go for me? I see how she dresses and how she speaks....and on her first day, she said she transferred from some fancy private school. Honestly, there's no chance in hell she'd ever go for me." I explained.

"Besides, what would my folks say about me being with a girl? They'll hate me." I continued. I came from a pretty traditional Italian family, meaning my folks were devout Catholics.

"Your folks won't have to know....at least not at first. Besides, if shit hits the fan you could always stay at my place." Olivia told me.

"Liv, you don't even stay at your place....you're always at my place." I said.

"That's because I don't like to be bothered with my drunk ass mother. But, I could always lock her out of the house.....she never remembers her key anyway." Olivia said, laughing and poking my cheek. Olivia had a rough life growing up, a life filled with abuse and pain; however, she would always find a way to make sure I was dealing with my problems and she would always comfort me by keep me laughing. She was truly a selfless person, and I knew that she would grow up to be someone that made the world a better place for others.

"You can't lock your mother out of the apartment."

"Sure I can! That way, you can come over and your can bring your hot little brainiac girlfriend with you." Olivia joked, and I felt my cheeks burn at the mention of her.
