****Maura's POV****
Jane and I had finished our study session, and she seemed to have gained a basic understanding of the things we went over. She insisted that she pay for a pizza as a token of her appreciation, which I was a bit hesitant about because I don't eat pizza. However, I was willing to try it because Jane seemed to like it so much....and, I thought it was so cute when Jane was explaining 'the awesomeness of pizza' to me.
"Maura, the doorbell just rang....the pizza's here!" Jane squealed, pulling me out of my thoughts. I smiled at her and got up as she grabbed her wallet, then I headed to the door with Jane right on my heels. I opened the door to see a guy about our age holding the pizza in a sleeve, and the guy grinned at me.
"I have a large meat-lovers pizza and I'm assuming it's for you, beautiful. If you want, my number can come with the pizza as well." the guy grinned, attempting to flirt with me. Since I had been at a co-educational public high school, I noticed that guys were often flirtatious with me because they assumed that I was heterosexual. I was a lesbian, and I had always known that I was attracted to other girls....that was part of the reason why my family moved to New York and why I chose to attend a co-educational public school.
"Actually, the pizza is really for this Italian beauty right here. She's a bit of a pizza connoisseur." I smiled, pulling Jane closer to me by her waist. Jane seemed slightly confused, maybe even a bit flustered, at the way I held her; however, I really wanted this guy to stop flirting with me before he could even get started.
"I, on the other hand, am not very fond of pizza. But, I am going to eat it because it makes this gorgeous girl so happy." I continued, followed by kissing Jane's shoulder since it was all I could reach.
"Oh, you two are...." he started, but stopped once he realized he didn't need to finish his sentence. I would've lied and directly said that Jane and I were dating, but my inability to lie would have caused me to break out in hives.
"Yes. Anyway, here is the money for the pizza." I stated, releasing Jane from my hold so that Jane could pay him. Jane pulled out a twenty dollar bill and handed it to the guy, then he looked at her and sighed.
"Do you want any change? The pizza plus the delivery fee was only $17...." he said as he handed the pizza to Jane.
"Keep the change." she answered and he nodded.
"Thanks, have a good evening." he said, giving us a small smile.
"You, too." I responded, then I closed the door. Jane and I made our way to the kitchen, Jane sitting the pizza on the island while I went through the refrigerator to find us something to drink.
"What do you usually drink with pizza?" I asked her as I grabbed a bottle of water out for myself. She didn't say anything, though, so I closed the refrigerator door and looked over at Jane. She was staring at her hands, seeming to be lost in deep thought, so I sighed and walked over to her.
"Jane?" I softly called, but she didn't respond.
"Jane..." I repeated, touching her arm. She jumped once she felt my hand on her arm, then she looked at me and deeply exhaled.
"Y-yeah?" she asked.
"Are you okay?" I questioned.
"Yes, I'm fine. I was just thinking about something...." Jane answered.
"Did you ask me something?" she continued.
"I did. I wanted to know what you want to drink with your pizza." I said to her.
"I usually drink a Coke or a Dr. Pepper with it." Jane told me.
"Well, I don't drink soda so....I don't have that." I informed her, causing her to pout a little.
