Paisley Monroe:
The next few hours passed in a blur. I had been carried back into the tour bus by the security guard, whose name I had now learned was Tony, and dumped unceremoniously on the sofa. Tony had looked at me strangely for a few minutes with his hands on his hips before breaking down in laughter and shaking his head.
"You boys are gonna be the death of me, I swear," he mumbled as he turned and walked back outside. "Put some freakin' pants on, Halen," he called over his shoulder with a chuckle before the door closed behind him with a mechanical "click."
The rest of the boys had sauntered into the small living room a few moments later, each of them dressed in casual loungewear. Leo grinned at me when he walked in, followed closely by the other two who were busy playing some sort of handheld video game. Punching noises and laser sounds could be heard coming from the devices, and the boys bickered and groaned as each gained advantage over the other.
I didn't even look up as they walked by and sat down, my face still blank as I stared vaguely ahead of me and wondered how on earth I was going to fix my current...situation.
I retraced the events of the night before, trying to pinpoint anything that could have led to this. Nothing immediately out of the ordinary came to mind. I had let Ashley make me over, we had gone to the concert, we had met Asher and the guys, and now...now I WAS Asher.
I felt my heart leap into my chest as a new and unpleasant realization washed over me. If I was in Asher's body, then...was he in mine?!
I immediately began to panic as I imagined Asher of all people controlling my body. I pictured his cocky smirk and annoying swagger from the night before - an attitude that would NOT go over well with my parents OR the kids at school.
I paled when I imagined him coming face to face with Mackenzie. I couldn't see that going anywhere but south very, very quickly.
I didn't realize I had groaned out loud until I was suddenly aware of three pairs of curious eyes on me.
"You good, man?" Leo asked as he retrieved a water bottle from the mini fridge.
"You've definitely been on one today, that's for sure," Tucker said without looking up from his game.
"I'm...yeah, I'm fine. I'm good," I said as calmly as possible, doing my best to imitate the lazy, carefree tone that Asher had spoken in last night. "I'm just a little out of it today."
That was an understatement.
"No worries, man. This heat will do that to ya. Gotta love Arizona," Leo said with a smile, tossing me his water bottle. "Drink up. It'll help."
My head shot up at the mention of Arizona, and I barely held my hands out in time to catch the bottle of water that was careening towards my face.
"We're still in Arizona?" I asked, my heart pumping with relief. I don't know what I would have done if the boys had already moved on to their next leg of the tour.
"Yeah, dude. We have that interview thing in a few hours, remember? Then we're heading out," Zack said absently, his attention still on the game in his hands.
"Interview?" I asked shakily, my mouth suddenly going extremely dry. I opened the bottle of water and frantically chugged the entire thing, my heart pounding and my palms sweating as the word "interview" swarmed around in circles in my head. I could NOT do an interview. I HATED being in front of the camera and I knew NOTHING about Asher Halen or his life. Which was a problem, because I was currently trapped inside of him.
"Yeah...interview," Leo said, looking at me with a worried expression on his face. "You okay, Ash? You're seriously acting really weird. Even for you."
I stared back at Leo for several minutes, searching his blue eyes. In their depths I saw nothing but genuine concern. Out of all of the guys, he seemed the most level-headed. Maybe he could help me out. I mean, these guys were my...Asher's...friends, right?
I took a deep breath and leaned forward slowly on the couch so that my elbows were resting on my knees. The other two boys had stopped playing their video game and were now looking at me intently, waiting for the big reveal.
"I think..." I began, my eyes flicking back and forth nervously, "I think last night...when we met those girls...something happened."
I watched in confusion as all three boys let out a sigh of relief and leaned back in their chairs, chuckling and rolling their eyes.
"Should have known it had something to do with lady troubles!" Tucker said.
"No, it's not like that!" I shouted defensively, my brows knitting together in frustration.
"Look, if you're still mad about us calling dibs on those Monroe chicks then we really are sorry, aren't we, Zack?" Tucker said, looking over at Zack who nodded emphatically.
Wait, what? Monroe chicks? They had been calling DIBS on me and Ashley? Ugh. Men were such pigs.
"Yeah, man. Super sorry," Zack agreed, raising his hands in surrender. "Won't happen again."
"No, I'm telling you," I said, pushing away my annoyance at their sexist behavior in favor of more pressing matters, "it's not like that. I think..."
I was cut off when a small metallic object came flying out of Tucker's hands and through the air towards me. Just like with the water bottle, I caught it right before it hit my face. I was going to have to really start paying attention to flying objects if I was going to be hanging around these guys.
I looked down at my hands to discover a white iPhone with a Ten Minutes to Midnight sticker on the back. I looked back up to see Tucker smirking at me.
"Speaking of lady troubles, you might want to deal with that," he said with a grin, nodding towards the phone in my hand. "It's been going off all morning. Good luck."
I didn't have time to ask what he meant before all three guys suddenly got up and left the bus, leaving me alone with nothing but a strange cell phone and my own sense of panic.
Luckily the phone didn't have a passcode, and I unlocked it to see a wallpaper of Asher kneeling down next to a little girl who looked to be about three years old with curly brown hair and bright green eyes just like his. I smiled a little bit in spite of myself. It was a cute picture. I wondered who the little girl was...
I didn't have too much time to admire it before a message from someone named Brandi popped up on the screen.
You can't just ignore me forever, you know. You say you don't want a relationship and then you go and leave my party with another girl? You're an ass, Asher.
Yikes.
I swiftly ignored the text and went into the "messages" folder where dozens of others just like it were waiting. This Brandi girl was apparently royally ticked off about something. From the brief background that I was getting from her texts, I didn't blame her.
I was swiping through conversation after conversation, trying to find anything useful at all to help me find my own body, when a new message suddenly appeared from a number I recognized all too well.
MY number.
The message on the screen stopped me dead in my tracks, simultaneously sending me relief along with a fresh wave of panic.
...Paisley?
