“Zoey! Get your little butt down here! We’re going to be late!”
I heard Casper call from downstairs when I was in the middle of tying my hair into a messy bun. When I was finally convinced that my hair wouldn’t fall, I frantically grabbed my bag and ran down to the kitchen to grab a toast. Yes, I eat breakfast on the way to school—don’t judge me! But of course, Casper was no longer there so I just grabbed my toast and headed outside after kissing Aunt Cara goodbye.
When I got in the car, the engine was already turned on, “I don’t get why you’re in a hurry, Cas.” He just glared at me and mumbled something like “turtle” then backed out of the drive way. Yeah that was probably it. “Shut up. Why are you even in a hurry?” I asked him in confusion because we both know that he, of all people, doesn’t care about being late at all.
“Nothing, just want a change for the better, so drop it,” he said dismissively. I knew there was more to it but as much as I want to annoy him, I didn’t press anymore—well, about the real topic. “Oh so now you want to promote world peace, huh?” I said teasingly and nudged him. What, I wasn’t one to be defeated; I have to have the last word!
His serious expression changed to confusion the moment I said that. He glanced at me then back to the road still looking baffled, “the hell are you talking about? That doesn’t even make sense!” I sighed in exasperation, how slow. “Change for the betterment of the world! Promote world peace!” I cried but he still looked very puzzled. “By winning, I could promote world peace,” I continued in a high pitch voice and he burst out laughing.
“Oh, so we’re being beauty pageant contestants now?”
“Not ‘we.’ You, my little cousin, are being a beauty pageant contestant,” I said pointedly and place an imaginary crown on his head, “Congratulations! You can now change for the better.”
He just chuckled and shook his head and I got my phone out and started playing 2Fuse as Wake Me Up by Avicii played on the radio.
So yeah, I’m Zoey Reynolds and I’m not very tall—well, okay fine, I’m not tall at all. I have a tanned skin that goes along with my chocolate brown hair and as much as I want to say that I have a very sexy eye color, I don’t. It’s just black unless it’s under the rays of sunlight it becomes dark brown—still dark, sad, I know. Oh and yeah, I’m seventeen years old and am a new senior student in South Shore High. Also, my cousin is the school’s quarterback—yes I just had to brag about it; proud cousin over here!
You see there are a lot of perks being the school’s quarterback’s cousin. Yeah, I know I’m lucky! Everybody already knows me even before school started since Casper posted it on his twitter and Instagram—the pride is a give and take relationship for us. Nobody tries to mess with me—that much—since Casper could beat the daylights out of whoever does. I get to hang out with stupid guys, Casper’s friends from Soccer and Football team, who cracks me up every time. And lastly, I get to sit at the jocks’ table whenever I want to.
But there’s also a bad side to it, like how the guys’ groupies would bug me for two different reasons. It would be either because they’re totally jealous that I can hang out with the guys whenever I want but they can’t so they decide to be a bitch to me or some would try to befriend me to get to Casper’s good side. It’s pretty annoying, if you ask me.
*****
We have arrived school and Casper parked in his usual parking space. As Casper got out of the car, I was about to put away my phone when it vibrated showing the message icon pop out. It was a text message from Ashley.
Can’t be there today. Sick. Sorry x
-Ash awsome
Oh great, I thought as I got out of the car after sending Ashley a quick ‘get well soon’ message and walked beside Casper. As if on cue, three girls—well more like life sized Barbie dolls—walked towards the school doors and stopped then eyed Casper like he was a gift from Santa. Totally not gonna have lunch with them. I nudged Casper as I stared in horror at the now giggling Barbie dolls, “I’m having lunch with you later, Ashley isn’t around. You won’t mind, will you?”
“Of course not, just be there.”
“Great, because I don’t want to be stuck with those life sized Barbie dolls. I got over them way way back,” I said and tipped my head towards the girls who we just passed by.
He chuckled, “they’re almost pretty hot, don’t you think?” and winked at the girls making them look like they were gonna faint. For a second, I thought they really would. We passed by them and got through the school doors and people started acknowledging Casper through high fives, nods, fist bump, ‘hey’s and what not. Seriously, can’t these people get enough of him? They see him five times a week plus a couple of hours on weekends for pete’s sake! Whoever pete was.
“I swear I could almost see their ribs, Cas! They’re too skinny!”
“Oh so it would have been okay to have lunch with them if they were overweight?”
“As long as they aren’t your groupies,” I shot back.
He huffed and waved his hand dismissively, “Everybody loves me, even Ms Buckenston dreams about me.”
“You’re gross!” I said disgustingly and pushed him. We reached my locker and I opened it to get my things while Casper leaned on the next locker to mine.
“Yeah, that was disgusting,” he mumbled and tapped his chin as if he was thinking about it and shuddered in disgust.
Stupid boy, I thought and laughed inwardly.
“Hey, man, I heard Luke’s coming back today,” Greg said approaching us. Casper looked up and fist bumped him, “Yeah, he texted me last night but I haven’t seen him” Cameron just shrugged and started looking around, “probably running late.” I closed my locker door and interrupted, “Who’s Luke?”
“Oh hey Zoey, I didn’t see you there,” Greg said and smiled slyly. Among all of Casper’s friends, Greg is the only one who likes to tease me a lot about my height. Sure I wasn’t tall, I was just 5’3 tall but that’s not a reason to tease me! I made a face at him and flicked him off which caused him to chuckle.
Bastard.
