looking around in the crowd, i was searching for my best friend who i hadn't seen face to face in far too long. peaking above the heads as best as i could, i finally spotted her familiar dark curls, and i huge grin spread across my face. "liza!" i yelled, making her turn towards me. her face lit up when she saw me, and i took off for her.

weaving between people and ignoring the stares i got as a twenty-seven year old woman ran through a crowd, i crashed into her when we were close enough. wrapping my arms around her neck, hers fell to my waist, and i held on for dear life as if i was afraid to lose her again. we swayed slightly as we gripped each other, giant smiles across our faces.

i pulled away, gripping her shoulders, and looked in her face, studying the features i took for granted when they were next to me. it was unbearable being away from her. she gazed up at me as well before pulling me back in for another hug. suddenly, a loud shot rang out from the crowd. concern and confusion flooded my face, and i held liza close to my chest, resting my cheek on the top of her head. i looked around for the source of the noise but didn't see anything.

pulling away to ask liza what she thought just happened, my stomach dropped. her eyes were glazed over slightly, and a dark scarlet stain was forming on her torso. "no, no, no, no, no," i said quietly, my head racing. i didn't know what to do. lowering to the ground, i lifted her shirt to find a bullet wound in her abdomen. "someone call 911," i said loudly to passerby. nobody stopped. nobody even acknowledged me.

"i need help!" i screamed, trying to put pressure on the gushing wound. still no response. i laid my head against her chest, trying to hear for a heartbeat. i checked her wrist for a pulse, and panic was beginning to set in. pressing my palm against the injury, tears were starting to cloud my vision. "stop fucking walking and call the goddamn paramedics!" i screamed, my voice breaking. "it's gonna be okay, baby," i sobbed, not entirely sure who i was actually trying to console.

it was becoming clear that i was losing time, and i was doing this on my own. her breathing had stopped, and i didn't have any clue what i was supposed to do. i pulled her up on my lap, resting her against my body. "please, liza," i cried. "you can't leave me. i need you here," i whimpered. her eyes were staring into nothing, and i refused to accept that this was the end.

holding her against my body, i rocked back and forth gently, pressing her against me like she was my child. still no one stopped. "oh, god," i wailed, reaching up to wipe away my tears and clear my vision while leaving a streak of blood across my cheek. "liza, it's gabbie. please stay with me," i sobbed, not sure i was even forming words anymore. my chest felt tight, and i felt like i couldn't breathe as everything was setting in.

snapping up in bed, my breathing was rapid, and i was drenched in sweat. my heart pounded in my chest as i looked around the room i was in. glancing over to the other side of the bed, liza was on her laptop, and she looked over to me with sympathy in her eyes. "same dream?" she asked with sorrow in her voice. i nodded, pressing a hand to my temple. "it's okay. go back to sleep. i'm okay, i promise."
