this got really dark. im sorry. just a warning i guess
trying not to be anxious about something that was in my job description, i listened calmly to the instruction i was being given by moreno. sitting in the passenger seat of a car that was parked on the streets in a sketchy area, i did my best to remember all of the orders i was being given. "these glasses have a small camera on them, so we'll be able to see everything that you see when you go in," he said, handing me the spectacles. i slid them on, glancing down at my outfit before looking back up at him. i had on worn, baggy jeans and a slightly ripped t-shirt with a thrifted leather jacket over it that looked like someone had owned it in the 90's.
i had to dress the part if i was going to make this believable. he handed me a small, wireless object that was a fleshy color and told me that it was my way of communicating with them. placing the small device into the opening of my ear, i brushed my shoulder-length blonde ombre hair back to see how it looked. had i not known it was there, i never would have guessed, so i was hoping neither would he. "okay, so i'm gonna drive a few miles south, so that nobody suspects anything, and we'll be with you every step of the way. nothing's gonna happen," he said in an attempt to reassure me.
"i know that," i snapped. "this isn't my first undercover job, asshat." moreno and i had worked together for awhile, so we bantered frequently, but it never impeded on either of us doing our job. being in an industry where very few females have these types of jobs, i'm always trying to compensate so that the men aren't trying to undermine me. showing any weakness wasn't an option.
"i'm just trying to help, gab," he said, putting his hands up slightly as a sign of showing me that he didn't feel the need for me snap on him. i looked out the window with my elbow resting on the window sill. rubbing my temples slightly, i inhaled through my nose, not meeting his eyes.
"i know, steven," i said in a dull tone, so many thoughts running through my head. i saw him nod slightly out of my peripheral vision. he opened a laptop and connected the feed from my glasses and the com in my ear. the same thing i was seeing popped up on his screen, and i heard him say a few test phrases into the earpiece. "everything's working," i said, suppressing any emotions i was feeling and trying to remain professional and cold as ice.
"okay, well i guess we'll talk face to face after we collect the information. goodbye, jean," he smirked, referring to the alias i'd been giving. i rolled my eyes playfully and pushed the car door open, stepping onto the cracked road below me. shutting it behind me, he drove off, and i already heard other people on our team tapping into the connections. the voice of different agents came in through my ear, and i muttered replies, trying not to look like a psychopath who was talking to themself.
they began directing me which way to go to meet up with the man known as gunner in his field of business. my alias had scheduled to come retrieve drugs he was selling. we were trying to receive inside information on the inner drug circle running the city. walking down an alley, i came out on a street with houses that had peeling paint and dead lawns. i brushed my fingers along the body of a rusted and dented car as i approached a house that appeared to be exactly the same as all of the others.
knowing that all of my coworkers and superiors could hear everything, i tried to slow my breathing and calm my mind before knocking on the door. adjusting my eyewear, i raised my first and knocked on the cracked wood. after a few seconds, the door opened slightly, and i saw a gruff, bald man who looked like the kind of person to start bar fights standing before me. he glared down at my 5'5" frame from his perch at what looked to be about 6'2", and i waited for him to speak first.
"business transaction?" he asked. i nodded, stating that we had spoken over the phone before, and i had the money with me. his eyes narrowed before he opened the door wider and let me into the house. light from the overcast sky outside drifted into the house before he closed the door behind me. the cheap wooden floor had a thin layer of dirt across it, and i didn't think removing my shoes before entering his house would be a requirement. he guided me into a room towards the back of the small building, and for the sake of the images being recorded through my glasses, i looked around at all of the rooms and hallways that we passed or went through.
