When you read grimoires or search for spells, there is always the possibility that the spell you are reading is fake. It is difficult to distinguish between the real and fake, so most experienced practitioners just create their own "spells" whenever needed. It is much easier to learn how to create a spell then try to find a legit spell each time you need to do a magical working.
In any magical working, it is important to remember the fundamentals as well as the recipe for magick. Once you are sure you possess the fundamentals, you have to figure out what method you're going to use to raise, direct and release energy.
1.) Cleanse yourself, your space, your materials and get in the right mindset.
You will want to make sure you chakras are cleared of any blockages and are working properly. You can always look up a YouTube video to guide you through a chakra meditation, or you can do it the old fashioned way with simple visualization. You have seven main chakras; your root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown. All of the information you need on chakras can easily be found online but I am planning on writing a more detailed chapter about it later. You can take a salt bath (not epsom salt, that's not real salt~ it's magnesium) or just a regular ritual bath with essential oils specific to your goal. While taking your ritual bath, visualize the negativity leaving your body. You also need to cleanse your materials. You can do this by sage smudging, or simply using a diluted sage spray if you are not able to burn things. Some other alternatives if you don't have lemon on hand are frankincense, lavender or peppermint.2.) Create spiritual barrier and open portal: A lot of books and sources will tell you to open a circle but I think that is counterproductive. A circle can keep energy you need to assist you out, while locking the energy you raise inside and keeping it from going out to the universe where you need it to go. Salt circles are especially unhelpful because salt is a neutral barrier and absorbs energy. For example, if you cast a salt circle while doing a curse, it will prevent the dark deities or entities you call upon from assisting you. Salt also absorbs energy so some of the energy you raise will be absorbed into the salt and not go towards your goal. My least favorite thing about salt, though, is that it prevents the energy you conjure and manipulate from going out in the universe where it needs to go. But, you still need you set up a barrier to a.) keep unwanted energy out b.) keep the energy you raise in and c.) help send the energy out to the universe when you are ready to release it. The easiest way to do this is with the elements. There are three versions of this. For healing or light magick, you can evoke (not invoke) the archangels in their corresponding corners. For dark magick or curses you can evoke the four demonic watchers in their corresponding corners. But the most reliable, neutral way to make a barrier is to evoke the elements. You put something that represents air in the east (feathers, incense, amethyst, citrine, books, an athame) something that represents fire in the south (a candle, dragon art or figurine, cinnamon, ginger, a wand, lava stone etc.) water in the West (water, a chalice, seashells, pearl, lapis lazuli, blue lotus, etc.) and earth in the north (a plant, rocks, animal figurines, green adventurine, etc.)
Once you have something that represents the elements in their corresponding corners, you need to call upon them. Speak to them from your heart and ask them to join your circle and aid your working. Ask them to keep unwanted energy out, to help keep wanted energy in, and to help you release the energy into the universe once you're ready.
3.) Think about timing. If you are doing a curse, you may want to wait until the dark or waning moon. If you're doing a spell to get rid of something, you're certainly not going to want to do it during the waxing Moon. And if you're trying to gain something it would be counterproductive to plan it for the waning moon cycle. Not only do you have to think about moon cycles, you can also take into consideration the days of the week because they have to do with different things. The best day to perform love or lust magick is Friday, while money magick is best performed on Thursday.
4.) Figure out how you are going to raise the energy: you can do this many different ways, and it doesn't matter which method you use. You can meditate and pull the energy from the earth, from the sky, from other people, or you could even try to create the energy yourself. You could try to chant or drum or dance to raise energy. You could masturbate to raise energy (but you would have to be very focused) or you can have a deity or entity lend you energy. Of course, there is a proper way to go about communication with a spirit of deity.
5.) Figuring out how you want to direct the energy: (aka "the spell") this is the part of your ritual that is specific to your goal. You will decide what materials you need after you decide what it is you want to do. For example, you could want to win the lottery. And to do this, you could decide you want to twitch your nose to make it happen. However, that doesn't have any of the laws of magick backing it up so it's not very likely to work. Just as there are laws of science, there are laws of magick as well. So when you create a spell, it is smartest to make sure it is backed up by one of the magick laws.
An example of this is contagious magick. Contagious magick uses something linked to the person to affect them. So using something that has someone's DNA could help you cast a spell on them, or even using a picture of them. If you wanted to put a strand of hair that belongs to someone you hate in a curse jar (a jar full of things that are associated with cursing and baneful magick) it would be backed up by the law of contagious magick. Once you decide what you want to do and if it is backed up by a magical law, that is when you get to pick out the details.
If you wanted to make someone fall head over heels for you, you may decide to attach them to a voodoo doll using sympathetic magick. You could incorporate contagious magick as well by stuffing a picture of the person inside of the doll. Or, if not, you would just have to create an etheric link between the person and the doll. You could then bath the doll in roses and sugar mixed with your dna or bodily fluids, this would also be considered sympathetic magick. There is so much that goes into writing spells and rituals. You have to know the timing, the meanings of herbs and crystals and colors etc. You don't necessarily have to memorize it all, but you do have to have a good reference.
6.) Releasing the energy: once you have your spellwork sitting in front of you, it will let off a very strong energy. Now you need to send that energy to the other person or wherever you want it to go. You should begin this process by asking the elements to help you send out the energy where you need it to go. Then you visualize the energy leaving and going wherever it is intended to go, until you feel the absence of energy that you felt moments before. After this, it is best to forget about the ritual completely and dispose of or put away the materials in a respectable manner.
