Skull Assassins

Chapter 1

The Girl in the Bathroom

-

I sat at the table in a restaurant I very much wanted to leave. My parents sat on my right side talking and laughing with some business partners who sat to my left.

"I'm going to the bathroom." I stated and left without another word.

"She's a bit...disturbed." I heard mother tell her friends before I was out of ear shot. I rolled my eyes and pushed the door open to the women's rest room. I checked to make sure no one was here before turned in the sink. I splashed water on my face and began wiping off the makeup mother had insisted I'd wear.

"A bit disturbed." I repeated bitterly. I finished and looked up into the mirror at my face. I never assumed I was pretty, I could be if I tried. But I never did. I wasn't ugly but I wasn't beautiful. My brown hair sat in a mess on top of my head. It was just past shoulder length and my green eyes looked menacing. Then something moved in the corner of the mirror.

I turned swiftly and saw her. A young African American girl was perched comfortably at the top of the stalls.

She smiled when I saw her. "I hoped you'd come in here eventually."

I looked from her to the ground. "How did you get up there?"

"Climbed." She said and jumped. I shrieked but was surprised when she landed on her feet and extended her hand like this was something people did normally. "My name is Angel."

"Okay..." I didn't shake her hand. "Well, Angel, I suggest you get back to your parents and stop stalking people in the bathroom."

I turned and pulled the door open but she pushed it closed. "Egypt, listen to me."

"How do you know my name?" I asked starting to worry. This girls eyes were deadly serious, a bit scary even. She looked like she was capable of killing people. "Let me go." I said sternly. She sighed and took her hand off the door.

"Fine. But I will be back. Goodbye Egypt." She said and pulled the door open almost hitting my face. She marched to the front doors and met a boy my age. He pointed to me and Angel shook her head. He sighed and they left. I walked back over to the table.

"Honey, you look spooked." My mother said and her jaw clenched when she saw my makeup was gone.

"It's nothing," I snapped. "Can we just finish and leave?"

I sat down on the couch next to the widow which overlooked my backyard. I lived in front of a forest which I explored all the time as a kid. I love it out there.

My eyes caught something move but I lost it just as quick as I found it. I scanned the woods when something black engulfed the view making me scream and jump back. I squinted at the smiling face.

"Angel?" I walked over and opened the window, Angel climbed in. "How did you-"

"Climbed." She smirked. "I'm a very good climber."

"I'm on the second floor."

She shrugged.

"How did you know where I lived?" I asked. Angel's face was softer than it had been the night before. She seemed younger, happier and trustworthy.

"Stalker girl, remember?" She laughed. "I'm sorry I freaked you out last night. It wasn't my intention."

"How old are you?" I asked taking in her clothes. She wore a black tank top with black pants and a black leather jacket and combat boots. She had two curved swords strapped to each hip. The back of her jacket had two slits in it.

"I'm eleven." Angel said.

"Are those-"

"Real?" She laughed. "Yeah."

"Egypt!" My dad called from downstairs. "Dinner is ready!"

"NOT HUNGRY, DAD!" I shout and sat in my bed. "Explain?"

"Well, first I should show you these..." Angel moves to the center of the room and stretched her back. Black wings extended from her moving a good fifteen feet across.

"Oh me God.." I said and stood up. "Can I touch then? They're beautiful!"

"Yeah," Angel said and I ran my hand along her wings. They were so soft but also strong and powerful.

"Can you actually fly?" I asked.

"Why would I have wings that couldn't fly?" Angel laughed. "Of course I can fly."

"What are you?" I asked. She smiled like she'd been waiting for this question.

"I am from the planet Iggnazia in the Order of the Skull Assassins, soldier Angel Banes of the 7th Colt Organization under the order of Commander Asper Dejarries in Earth Protection." She said.

"Okay, I missed half the words you just said. But you are...an alien basically" I asked. Angel had pulled her wings back in. "Do all Iggnazians-is that what you call it?" She nodded. "Do you all have wings?"

Angel laughed. "No. There are four tribes, each with unique powers. There are children of air, with wings. Children of sea who grow tales when in contact with water-"

"Mermaids?" I asked.

"That is where the legend came from, yes. Then children of war, who are very skilled warriors. And finally children of disguise who can literally turn invisible." Angel finished.

"This is insane," I said. " you're insane."

"But you believe me," Angel said softly. "Deep down you know it's true. Egypt, have you parents told you yet?"

"Told me what?" I asked defensively. Angel took a deep breath like she was about to tell me something horrible.

"Egypt, you're adopted."

I froze, my mind racing. Every muscle in my body seemed to fall apart and I stared blankly into Angel's eyes.

"What?"

"I'm sorry you had to find out like this, your real parents are on Iggnazia. You are an alien, Egypt, you were born to be a Skull Assassin and it's time to face your destiny."

"Destiny?" I asked still I shock. "Angel they lied to me, about everything! My entire life an I never knew! I'm an alien? Fine. I've suspected it for a while but I'm adopted? This can't be true...I have to ask them."

"They'll ask where you got the information from...Egypt, humans can't know we exist!" Angel grabbed my arm but I pushed her away. I opened my bedroom door to storm downstairs and was met with the boy from the restaurant.

"Wha-?"

His hand clamped over my mouth and I felt my eyes close.

"Goodnight, Egypt." He whispered in my eyes as everything turned to black.
