starlight

she sat there under the stars
as they became brighter
while the remnants of sun faded away
wondering what could have been

she remembered those distinct eyes
so blue that waves crashed inside them
emotions roared and fought
always at war, never sure

she wondered what could have been
with that boy who
could never make up his mind
his eyes always betraying his inner struggle

above her, in her mind
the stars crashed and burst
showering her in liquid light
and threading into her veins

then she realized it could never be
or never have been
as she lost that chance long ago
with that fateful wave goodbye

she sat there in the starlight
her smudged silhouette painted
against the light atop the hill
for hours on end

until the sun's rays once again
peeked over the hill
warming her body
and igniting her lost passion once more.
