                                                                            Chapter 11

Kolt’s frozen in place.  He’s held captive by the dazzling pillar of blue light.  And yet, the fear continues to creep through his body.    And he couldn’t do a single thing to stop it.  The evil voice threatening his family has him paralyzed with dread.

Kolt could have been bedazzled by the blue light for minutes, hours, days, years; he didn’t know.  He could have been stuck there for the rest of his life.  All he really did know was that he was completely and utterly helpless.

Helpless that is, until Ryder came looking for him.  Ryder crept up behind Kolt and placed a hand on his shoulder.  Kolt jumped sky high, but was finally able to move.  Upon landing, Kolt turned around with his hands clenched into fists.

                “Ahhhhhh!!!” screamed Kolt.

“Woah, it’s just me.  It’s just Ryder.”

                “You… You scared me.”

“I’m sorry.  But, you just seemed so still.  You looked mesmerized by that rock formation in front of you.”

“Rock formation?”  Kolt asked confused.  “It’s a….” and Kolt turned around to look again.  But this time, the light was gone.  “I swear, there was a… a blue light.”

                “Um, Kolt?  There’s nothing there.”

“Okay, forget about it.”  He shook his head and tried to clear his thoughts.  He laughed a little to make sure Ryder knew he wasn’t crazy.  “Thanks for coming to my rescue.”

The superhero pair stared out into the distance together.  While Kolt was staring, his brain was also working on overdrive.  He kept thinking of how alone he felt on this planet: on Earth.  He thought about his family.  He was alone.  All alone.  He sighed and felt the weight on his shoulders begin to press down upon him.  He felt depression sinking into his brain and weigh heavily on his conscience.  He felt the despair begin to wrap itself around his body.

Then, a hand was place on his shoulder.  It snapped Kolt out of his thinking and back into reality.

“It’s okay, Kolt.  Your trusty sidekick is here.”

                “Thanks, Ryder.”  Kolt smiled gently.

                “Any time.”  Ryder smiled back.

They, then, hopped onto their mototryders and headed back to the spaceship.

                                                                                *******************

“Kolt, we need to talk,” said Ryder once they were both seated at the table onboard the ship.

“Uh, well, okay.”  Kolt frowned at the idea.

“Wow, this is going to be harder than I thought it was going to be.”

“What?  Are you finally going to tell me the secret about yourself that Sammy was going to spill the beans on?”  Kolt leaned forward in anticipation.
