Chapter 6
Kolt looks simply sweet in his new moon shoes. Of course, they are shiny black and match Kolt’s superhero outfit, but that’s NOT the best part. Oh no! Not even close!
The coolest part of his sweet moon shoes is that they defy gravity. Yes, when Kolt wears them, he flies! They arrived in the newest shipment from the higher powers that be (whoever they are).
Kolt, being both a young adult and a boy, had to try them out immediately. So, there he was geared up, breathing apparatus engaged, and moon shoes on, standing outside the spaceship.
“Kolt, can you stay around here while you test them out? Please?!?” begged Ryder.
“Why?”
“I just don’t want you to get hurt. I don’t want you to get hurt and be too far away.”
“Worried about me, eh?” inquired Kolt. “But, I’m a superhero!” He laughed.
“Yes, and even superheroes have people who care about them.”
“Look. I promise I’ll be careful. I won’t go too far, but I want to really test these out. I won’t go looking for trouble. I promise.”
“Okay, Kolt. I get it. Just be careful.”
With that, Kolt kicked off the ground and began to defy gravity. He took it easy and got use to the shoes around the space station.
After a couple of minutes, he looked down at Ryder. He saluted and headed off to the west.
Ryder sighed after Kolt was out of view. “Please remember you promised. I can’t do this thing without you.” Ryder sat down on the front steps of the ship. “Oh Kolt, if only you knew. If only you knew who I really was.”

Kolt laughed as he soared through the air. It was the best feeling in the world for superheroes. And now, he knew what it felt like. And all from a simple pair of shoes.
As he flew, he noticed the ever changing landscape. He flew over the countless miles of pock-marked Earth. He even flew over a couple of blue, green lakes. He smiled to see the naturally colored water in the lakes.
Eventually, he came to a circular piece of land in the middle of a lake. It was completely surrounded by the water. On this land, there were objects that had long, brown trunks. Towards the top of the object, there were green things protruding from it. He had always seen pictures, but this was Kolt’s first real tree. He decided that if he ever had the chance, he would bring Maddie Allen here. She would love to see how pretty and quiet it was here.
After a while, he decided he needed to go back to the ship. It had taken him a while to get here and he didn’t want to take too much time out exploring. He knew that Ryder was a worrier and for some reason he didn’t want to make Ryder worry.
On his way back, after passing another blue lake, Kolt saw a strange gold flash happen in front of his eyes. He willed the shoes to slow down and slowly descended to the beaten, weathered Earth.
He looked around and couldn’t see anything. In every direction, the barren landscape stretched on. Just as Kolt was ready to take off again, he saw the flash coming from his right. He flew off in that direction.
A short journey later, Kolt came to a steaming hole in the Earth’s crust. This was the site where the first Americium bomb was dropped. The crater sank deep into the Earth. The magma was seeping out of it, causing the steam.
“Well, well, well. Stupid fairy boots, I see,” came a voice from across the crater.
“Oh, Boy! Sammy. Why am I not surprised?”
“Hello, child,” Sammy said while stepping into view.
“Are you here to jump in? Do everyone a favor, Sammy?”
“No, actually, I’ve come to make a sacrifice.”
That’s when Kolt saw there was another person with Sammy. It was another man. There was something oddly familiar about this man.
Sammy noticed Kolt’s confusion. “Don’t know who it is yet, do you?” taunted Sammy.
“Kolt, run! LEAVE NOW!” The other man shouted out in desperation.
Kolt’s jaw dropped in shock. He recognized the voice. The realization had finally hit him. “Dad?”
“Oh yeah. It’s your dear old daddy.” sneered Sammy.
“Sammy, let him go! Or so help me, I will fly over there and….. and… and…..”
“So help you what? You can’t do anything.”
“Kolt,” came his dad again, “just go. I don’t want your help.”
“But….” Kolt began to get upset. He wanted to do the right thing, like always, but didn’t know what the right thing was to do. “You’re my dad. I have to help you. Mom has been miserable without you. I really have to help you.”
“No, son! Go! Get out of here!”
“Oh Kole, don’t you know? You’re son is a hero. He is going to save you. Well, at least try to save you. And he is going to FAIL!”
“Sammy, please, just let my dad go.” The desperation crept into Kolt’s voice. “Come on, I will do anything.”
Sammy seemed to be thinking about it. He took a moment or two. Then, after a few minutes of contemplation, he decided on his answer.
“Nope.” With that, Sammy threw Kole, Kolt’s dad, into the lava filled crater.
“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!” shouted Kolt. He, then, threw himself in after his Dad. He flew as fast and as straight as he could. It didn’t matter though. No matter what Kolt did, his dad always seemed to fall faster than him.
The heat was starting to get to Kolt. His Dad had fallen far out of reach. With his clothes feeling like he was on fire, he reluctantly stopped his momentum. Kolt admitted defeat. He slowly ascended the crater.
He was once again too late to save his Father.
Off in the distance a cackling, menacing, evil laugh could be heard.
And there was a boy, a superhero, mourning his father.
