Chapter 16

At first, Crew panicked.  “What?... Is… is the ship still flying?  Are we landing?”

“Um, no, Crew.  I’m sorry.”  Maddie apologized.

Crew looked at her stunned.  “Uh,… What for?”  His eyebrows twitched upwards.

“I, uh…”  Maddie brushed her fingers through her long blonde hair.  “I…um… I heard you speaking.  You were dreaming.”

“Oh,” said Crew dejectedly.  He put his head down and looked at his shoes.  He locked his fingers behind his head and drew a long breath in.  He waited a while and then blew it back out.

“You sounded like you were in a battle for your life.”  The smile on her face was just as evident in her voice.  “It sounded kind of cool.  Come on, Crew, it’s really not that embarrassing.”

                “Oh, yeah?” exhaled Crew comically.

“Come on!  Don’t be like this.  Really, everyone dreams.  Even I dream, Crew.”

“Oh, I am sure you do,” replied Crew.  “But, it can NOT be more embarrassing then my stupid ‘dreams’.”  Crew air quoted the word dreams when he said it.

“Um, I am not so sure, Crew.  You don’t even know what I dream about.  And I am not quite sure what you dream about either.”

“Fine, let’s just compare our embarrassing dreams, then.”

“Oh, geez,” hesitated Maddie.  “Somehow, I don’t think this is going to be any fun.  But sure, I’ll play your game.”  Maddie took a deep breath and then continued.  “I dream about superheroes.”

“Ha!” came the reply a little more harshly then Crew intended.

“Well, thanks for laughing.  And see, I told you that mine was more embarrassing.”

“No, it’s not that,” explained Crew.  “I was just…..surprised.  That would have been my last guess, if I even had one.”

“Yeah, but see, I didn’t even tell you everything.  Dreaming about superheroes isn’t even the worse or most embarrassing part.  I’m always the sidekick.  I always get taken.  And I always have to be rescued.”

                “Really?” Crew asked skeptically.

“Yeah.   You’d think I would at least be a hero in my own dreams.  But NOOO- I am the stupid sidekick.  A stupid sidekick who is a GIRLY GIRL!  Ugh!”  Crew laughed while she continued talking.  “Thanks for laughing, but I have something that is even more funny.”

                “Yeah?”

“My sidekick name is Thunder Ryder.”

Immediately, Crew stopped laughing.  He stared at Maddie.  His jaw, literally, flapped open and hung in the air.  He tried to move his mouth a few times and tried to speak, but no words came out.

                “What?” questioned Maddie.

“Uh…er….um….” Crew tried to start spitting out words, but none came.
