Fireflies

I had never seen so many in one place before.

They floated everywhere. Shining over the water of the lake and popping out of the grass.

My eyes were searching in every direction for them.

It seemed like hardly a second would pass between the flashes.

As each little golden light winked at me, my smile grew.

I had always loved to chase and catch them but this was better, because there were so many.

They were like little fairies that danced in the air and called me to join them.

The thought that they could have been fairies made me happy.

I could see why travelers in the olden days would have thought they were.

With the way that there light beckons you forth.

Whether to show you the path or to lead you astray, it doesn't matter.

Even if they aren't creatures of the night, they ,as well as the night, hold a magic of their own.

You see that magic in the face of a child as they run around their backyard on a summer night to catch the little creatures in their hands.

They hold it to their face and the glow shine onto them.

I see their magic as they float and wink and promise.

A promise to return next summer and bring their little magic back with them.

Until then, I kiss you goodbye and goodnight, my sweet fireflies.
