When a kebab stand practically calls your name, you decide to stop for some actual food.
You're exhausted, having trailed after Taehyung's rampage of the town nearly all day long, and the delicious scent of savory food wafting over your nose is a welcome distraction from your aching legs.
The orange sun hangs low in the misty sky, and city street lights have already begun to gradually flicker on and seep past the approaching darkness in warm golden and vivid white tones. You hastily retrieve your kebabs of choice and call for Taehyung, who turns with wide, glittering eyes that reflect the color of the setting sun.
Instantly he bounds over to you and accepts the lamb skewer that you offer. As much as you dislike the guy, you're not about to let him starve.
"Y/n, what's that?" He pipes up between a mouthful of food and juts one finger at the object that you stuff into your back pocket.
"Wallet," you answer curtly, while munching on your kebab. "I keep my money in it and use it to buy stuff." At this, he hums thoughtfully, contemplating this newfound information.
Humans sure are odd, trading little slips of paper for delicious snacks. Taehyung moves to chomp down on his skewer, when something out the corner of his eye catches his attention.
What appears to be a tiny ball of pure white cotton comes prancing up, itty bitty paws tapping against the pavement and eyes bright when it suddenly spots Taehyung.
He leaps away when it yaps at him and tugs at its little pink leash.
"Princess, quiet down!" A woman, holding onto the other end of the leash, scolds the tiny dog. "Don't bark at the nice people!"
After a moment of silence in which the beast calms, Taehyung asks, quietly, "May I touch it?"
You suppress a snort.
The woman meets his eyes and nods rapidly, gesturing down to the little white ball of rage. "Go right ahead! She's very friendly."
Without any hesitation he kneels in front of the dog, who watches him with glittering beady eyes and for a moment, the two are caught in an intense staring contest. Cautiously, he reaches out one hand towards it's fluffy head.
The dog, Princess, instantly goes off with a string of yaps as her little body darts back and forth in front of Taehyung. He doesn't appear alarmed at all, and the woman begins to rein in the beast, apologizing profusely.
When it bravely leaps forward with intention to nip at his slim fingers still poised mid-air, Taehyung finally retaliates.
Bright eyes narrow to slits and lips curl into a snarl, baring pearly white and sharp teeth at the tiny hound with shackles raised. All too like a cat, a whizzing hiss spills past his lips.
The dog cries out and scampers away from him with its tail between its legs.
You're shocked, people nearby are dumbfounded, the woman stares down at Taehyung like a deer caught in headlights.
He is grinning to himself, chasing the poor pup away using just his piercing gaze. Fearfully, the woman crouches down and scoops her dog up with trembling hands and scampers away without looking back.
You want to go home.
You don't know how much longer you can put up with him out here, trudging down the sidewalk with limbs heavy and patience wearing thin. Taehyung skips along without a care in the world, gnawing at the remains of his lamb skewer.
You fix your tired eyes on the demon ahead of you, trying to channel all of your anger into the back of his head. The embarrassing feline antics, the cocky attitude, the downright infuriating ability to get under your skin; it all makes you want to nearly combust. Why does he have to be so annoying? And why did you have to get stuck with him?
Better question: Why did you agree to keep him around?
The longer you glare at Taehyung's back, the further you drift from irritation. You recall the numerous times today when he had turned to you with an vibrant smile and excitedly pointed to things that caught his interest, how he had practically bounced from place to place, and when he spoke to you, it was with vigor and sparkling golden eyes.
So caught up in your thoughts, you nearly don't notice the pair of civilians that you walk past.
Taehyung meets eyes with one of them, a young girl probably no older than six years, and flashes her a bright rectangular smile that you can't help but find charming. The little girl reciprocates with a grin of her own before bashfully turning to bury her head into the sleeve of her mother's jacket.
Though he is undoubtedly weird, you suppose that, maybe, Taehyung isn't so bad after all.
