The Margera's house was really nice and clean and they all seemed to really like eachother and get along. It is exactly the way i want my family to be. "So how old are you?" Brandon asked me as April brought us into the kitchen for homemade cookies. "I'm 5." I answered him.
"I'm 6 and you can call me Bam, everybody does." He told me and I giggled a little at the name.
"Why does everybody call you Bam?" I asked, curious about the odd nickname he had.
"We call him Bam becasue he tends to run into walls a lot." His dad told me and me and Bam lauged as April handed me, Bam and Jesse cookeis and a glass of milk. The cookies were really good, mommy never made us cookies. She said she didn't have time for such things.
Once we had finished our cookies Bam brought me out back to play. He told me he wanted to teach me how to skateboard and I told him I would try my best but that I had never done it before. Bam spent the rest of the afternoon showing me all the tricks he could do and he tried to teach me how to just make the skateboard go. I fell off a lot but i would just laugh and get right back on. “You’re cool Emma, you don’t cry when you fall like most girls, you can be my friend.” Bam told me and I smiled. I was happy to have a friend and Bam seemed like he was going to be tons of fun to hang out with.
Bam and I played out back until April called us inside because it was dinnertime. She told me I was welcome to stay and I did because I knew mommy was just going to get us McDonalds for dinner and I was sick of it, we ate it all the time. April had actually cooked this dinner from scratch. It was the very first time I had ever had a real home cooked meal. Mommy always made us frozen food that was gross.
Nobody at the Margera house fought during dinner and it was a nice change. You couldn’t eat at my house without some kind of argument that turned into a screaming match. Now days nobody even ate together really, so sitting together with the Margera family was really nice. “Hey mom, can Emma sleep over tonight?” Bam asked as April went to get dessert.
“I don’t mind as long as it’s okay with her parents.” April told him.
“Come on Emma, let’s go ask your parents!” Bam said excitedly and Bam and I raced over to my house to ask mommy.
“Mommy!” I yelled walking into our house with Bam at my heels.
“What do you want now?” She asked all annoyed.
“I was just wondering if I could sleep over at Bam’s house tonight.” I said quietly not meeting her eyes. I didn’t like when she was angry like this, it scared me.
“Emma, I honestly don’t care what you do.” She said as she started unpacking a box. “Do you know where my stuff is?” I asked tentatively.
“I don’t fucking know! This house is a shit hole right now and I’m supposed to know where your stuff is? You should have kept track of it!” she yelled at me and I desperately tried to keep from crying. Bam took my hand and started pulling me back towards the door. “It’s okay Emma you can borrow some of my clothes for the night. I don’t mind and I know mom has extra toothbrushes and stuff.” He told me as we walked back to his house.
Bam told his mom I was staying and that I was just going to borrow his clothes for the night since it would have taken a long time to find my stuff since our house was a mess from moving. I was happy he didn’t say anything about how mommy had yelled at me. I didn’t want April to know how mean mommy could actually be.
Bam and I watched a movie with his bother and parents before we went up to bed. I was going to share Bam’s room with him. I was excited. This was going to be my very first sleep over. We had gotten changed and brushed our teeth and were just about to crawl into bed when April and Phil came into say good night to us. I was surprised they even bothered; my parents never did anything like this. Bam and I crawled into his bed together and his mom tucked us in and gave us each a kiss. Phil gave us each a kiss too, and then as they were walking out of the room they told Bam they loved him as they turned off the light.
My parents were nothing like the Margera’s. They would never do anything like that, and almost no one says, “I love you” in my house. I was jealous of Bam because he had such nice parents, but I was happy that he was letting me experience what nice parents were like by letting me be his friend. I hadn’t even known him a day and already he had given me the greatest gift.
