"Jason," I said again, sitting beside him on the bed and raising my fingers to his cheek. "Look at me."
His eyes glistened as he turned his head towards me slightly. He only met my eyes when I slid my fingers under his chin and lifted it.
"What's wrong?" I whispered, looking into his mesmerizing blue eyes.
As he saw me, truly saw me for the first time since I stepped into the room, he broke.
His eyes pooled with tears as he reached forward and pulled me into a hug. He clutched me tightly, burying his face in my neck as he simply absorbed my presence.
He did not sob or cry out. He only held me as he willed his tears not to fall.
I held him worriedly, rubbing my hands in soothing circles over his back.
"Talk to me," I cooed softly.
It was a long while before he decided to speak.
"She's going to die," he breathed over my shoulder.
"Who?" I asked.
"My mother. She has cancer. It's bad."
I didn't know what to say, so I simply hugged him closer to my chest. I knew the pain of losing a mother, and it was unimaginable.
"I'm right here, okay? I'm not going to let you face it alone," I told him, rubbing my hand up and down his back.
"I know," he whispered, hiding his face in my neck again. "Thank you."
It was weird seeing him this vulnerable. He was always the strong one, not me. But now that he needed me like I've always needed him, I couldn't let him down.
"Anything you need," I said and left it at that. He simply nodded against my skin.
After a long while of holding him in silence, he finally found the strength to pull back and look at me again.
I let my eyes trace his features like they had hundreds of times before.
I knew I was missing soccer practice at the moment, but I would give up anything in the world to stare into his eyes forever.
Then a new question formed in my mind, and I decided to voice it. "What are you doing in Holiday Tucker's house?"
"Oh," he laughed a little, and though it was a dry laugh, it was better than nothing. "I've been staying here since she brought me to town. Didn't quite have enough money to make it back, so she gave me a room while I found work."
"You're telling me you've been in this house for months?"
"These people are crazy," he whispered with a lighter chuckle, "but they're not all bad once you get used to them."
"I can only imagine," I said, smiling a bit myself.
Jason's smile faded as he fell silent. After a few moments of uninterrupted thought, he looked back up at me and asked, "Will you come with me to say goodbye?"
"Of course," I grabbed his hands and traced my thumb over his knuckles.
"Thank you," he said again.
I nodded and as we both stood from the bed, I pulled him into another hug.
He was so warm, and holding him like this seemed to fill a void that had nestled itself into my heart.
When he pulled back, I moved my hands so that they were resting on his shoulders. Then I trailed my fingers down his arms until I could interlace them with his own.
He gave me a small sad smile as I held his hands.
"When would you like to go?"
"Now," he bit his lip a little. "Can we go now?"
"I'll call us a cab," I squeezed his hands before I dropped one to pull out my cell phone.
After calling the cab, I sat back down on the bed and pulled Jason so that he was straddling me. He returned his face to my neck as I held him tightly.
We sat in silence for a few moments before he mumbled, "It feels weird."
"What does?" I asked curiously.
"Not being taller than you anymore."
"I'm only a couple inches taller than you now," I said. "It's not that much."
"But I liked being taller," he said as he placed a few soft kisses on my neck. "It made me feel needed."
My stomach fluttered and I closed my eyes as I relished the feeling of his lips against my skin.
"I'll always need you, Jason," I whispered.
A soft chuckle hummed in my ears. Gently kissing his way back up to my ear, he mused, "I know."
I blushed faintly, forgetting just how vulnerable this boy was capable of making me feel.
"I love you," I said softly, clutching him just a little tighter as I said it.
"I love you, too, cupcake," he muttered into my neck.
As our beautiful moment came to an end, a voice drifted up the stairs.
"Did someone order a cab?"
"That's our cue," I said. Jason slowly detached himself from me and grabbed his wallet from the nightstand.
Holding out his hand for me, I wordlessly took it and allowed him to pull me to my feet.
"Let's go."

A/N
Sorry, that was one hectic week. Today has been dubbed "No Fun Sunday" as a vow to not leave the house and just have a down day.
Anywho,
If you could be any supernatural creature (werewolf, vampire, witch, mermaid, etc), what would you be?
Thanks for the read!
