She walked the halls of her house, looking out the windows at the town she had been confined to since she was a child. She was never allowed out of the town, even when her parents and little brother left town to do something she was always left behind with the house maid. She didn't talk to her much or see her but she knew she was there. She walked into the living room and grabbed her cloak and her coin purse. They needed food for dinner and other little things. She looked inside and found that she would need more so she walked through the house and to her parents, well they weren't actually her parents but they were the only people she could remember that had ever wanted her so that's what they became. She got to their door and heard them arguing. Loudly. Anna turned to walk away, deciding to get what she could with the money in the purse until she heard her name. She crept back to the door and pressed her ear to it, making sure to be as quiet as she could.
" Were taking too much from her. She doesn't have enough time to make anymore," she heard her father argue. Her mom seemed to sigh or make a sound along those lines.
" She's not like us. She doesn't need as much blood to live. She'll be fine. We need more tonight," her mom yelled back. What were they talking about her blood for? What was going on?
" We agreed when we got her we'd only draw once every two weeks. That's what we're going to do," her father said, trying to end the argument. Her mother wasn't having it though.
" I will draw tonight or i'll start aging again, i have a reputation to keep up you know," her father's angered yell was one that seemed to shake the house. She decided now was the time to intervene. She waited a few minutes before opening the door, making it look like she was in a hurry.
" Is everything ok? What was that yell?" Her mother looked horrified but masked it quickly. Her father plastered a smile on his face before responding.
" It was nothing darling, don't worry," was al he said. She looked at them both and nodded.
" Ok. I'm going into town to get some things for dinner and something for Joey's birthday but I need more money. Can i borrow some?" she asked innocently. Her little brother's birthday was indeed coming up soon so it was a great excuse. Her mother simply went to the drawer next to her bed and pulled out a bigger bag of money and handed it to her.
" Use what you want, but be back before nightfall," her mother warned. And with that she left.
For as long as she could remember Anna knew she was different but she couldn't believe that her parents we're using her for what powers lied in her blood. She didn't know what they were but she knew they were using it. Drawing blood from her while she slept. She had been feeling different lately, it must have been because her mom was taking more blood than she should.
At the thought of her family using her for their own benefit something in her changed, darkened. She took the money and walked out of the house after briefly calling out that she was leaving. Joey tried to get her to let him come but she had to say no because she was doing something extra special. She handed him off to the maid who simply said goodbye before turning and walking back into the house. She walked out the door and into town. People glanced her way and averted their gazes quickly without so much as a wave hello. It had been like this much of her life because she was Fae. She just simply walked through town towards the market, but before she made it there she slipped into the blacksmith.
" Hello?" she called out. A tall, well built man emerged from the back a second later. He looked her over and a hint of a sneer appeared on his face but she ignored it.
" What do you need little lady?" he asked while wiping his hands of whatever was on them and setting the rag on the wooden counter separating them. She looked at the large blades lining the walls. They all seemed too big and too heavy for her to pick up and use until she looked at the daggers with short blades and though they were small and concealable she wanted something a bit bigger. Finally she spied two identical daggers with longer blades, almost able to be swords but small enough for her to carry around and use. She pointed to them and the man took them off the wall, handing them to her. Anna weighed them in her hands and looked at the blades one more time. She nodded.
" I'll take these. Is there anyway that you could keep these on hold and i'll come back on my way home and get them?" As she said that she saw a small knife that looked small enough for Joey to use. "And that one as well." He pulled it off the wall and set them to the side but turned back to her and looked at her with questions swirling in his eyes.
" They're for my father, as gifts," she said. It must have been enough because he simply had her pay then and sent her on her way. She smiled as she slipped back out of the shop and continued to the clothes shop.
She spent all day in the markets and used all the money she had buying things. She did get food, along with a couple small white tunics, black fitted pants, and black high-rise boots. No one questioned the excuses she gave. Presents for her brother, for her father, or gifts to impress a boy she had seen around town. They didn't think twice as she left. They were all happy to have a Fae out of their establishments. Night had begun to fall as she walked home. She stopped by the blacksmith's shop and found a note next to her daggers.
" Had to leave early. I took inventory so don't steal anything. Good luck with whatever you need these for, since there not for your father," was all it said. She shook her head, left a thank you note, and grabbed her weapons that were thankfully concealed in a wrap. She made it home just as the last light of day vanished. She snuck in the back door and stashed the weapons before hiding her clothes and walking into the kitchen to help make dinner. When she got inside Joey charged her and it made her stop and turn to the maid.
" Do you have your own home that you could go to if something happened?" Anna asked. The maid simply nodded. She nodded and picked up her brother.
" And what did you do today mister?" He started listing all the things he did that day which included finding a cat outside but mom and dad wouldn't let him keep it. Still, he had stashed it in the shed in the back and had been feeding and playing with it all day. She laughed and set him down to help make dinner. He ran around the kitchen while a smile on his face. As she watched tears began silently falling as she realized what she planned to do.
" Miss? Are you ok?" the maid asked. She shook her head, wiping the tears away but nodded and thanked her for her concern before continuing with dinner.
Dinner was fast that night. As were the events that followed. The small dagger she had bought was left on the table for a small child who held half her heart all these miles away.
