It was Friday morning.
I shot out of bed and compiled myself into the best looking, calmest me I could be.
In the morning, I met Oliver in the cafeteria while waiting for school to finally begin. His tone was unusually somber as he waited with his younger brother.
"So, Jack..." He spoke softly and shyly, like every word he said hurt. "You never told me who you were asking to the dance. Is it something you're keeping a secret?" He looked almost hopefully into my eyes. The eye contact was very, very direct. We had never gotten so close together before.
I could practically hear his heartbeat.
"Oh, uh, yeah," I paused, looking away.
"You don't have to tell me, Jack,"
"No, you're my best friend. You can know,"
I looked up at him and smiled, then looked over at Devin as he sat across the room.
"After first period English, I plan to ask someone out,"
I knew that we would have time right after first period to walk to second period together, so he could know right away.
Oliver's face grew hotter as he looked at me.
"It's not something I like to talk about, but.." I hesitated. But I knew Oliver would accept me. "I plan to ask... a guy,"
He smiled widely, as he glanced to his left and scratched his head,
"Well, I support you Jack," "I actually also-"
"So, to cut to the chase, I'm asking Devin to the dance,"
Once again, the school bell rung, ending our conversation.
Oliver still looked somewhat sick.
